Formula Indie Sessions – Interview with Naesia

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
I remember singing songs together with my mum when I was very little but I also have very vivid memories of when I first started taking piano lessons and singing in the choir!
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I grew up in quite a musical household with my Dad being a DJ so I always gravitated towards music.
I started writing my own songs at 12 years old but only seriously got into creating full songs at like 17, I really wanted to learn how to make my own beats.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
My latest single is called Duality and it’s all about ambivalence in relationships. The song is out now and available on all streaming platforms if you wanna listen & find out more!
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
I don’t like putting my music into a box but I would say alternative, contemporary R&B combined with Neo-Soul and hints of Trap/Hiphop elements!
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Oooh I love that question – tough one though! I guess the biggest shift for me was learning to listen from the audience’s perspective, not just the my own. As musicians, we get obsessed with micro-details that 99% of people probably won’t even notice. When I started focusing on the elements that actually move a casual listener—the rhythm, the vocal delivery, and the overall energy—my music became much more relatable and engaging – it’s about authenticity, not perfection.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
All I really need is a Laptop with Ableton Live to make my beats and my phone to write the lyrics on the Notes App. But I can also really recommend Splice for great quality sounds and samples. I have a mic, headphones, interface and speakers in my home studio and that’s pretty much all my essentials!
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Loving Natanya, Kenji and Bellah at the moment! Also ‘Fatal Attraction’ by Javán and ’touch myself‘ by kwn are on repeat!
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
I think mainly in terms of my lyrics, storytelling and the mindset and outlook on life I’m tryna convey in my songs. In terms of my sound and aesthetic, I think it was just the music I listened to myself while growing up which shaped my style a lot.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I want them to feel that special feeling that certain songs give you – it’s really hard to put it into words but real music enthusiasts will know what I mean. But yeah generally I would of course like them to feel happier and uplifted after listening to my songs.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
To persevere no matter what happens and to trust my intuition!
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Honestly, I know it’s no massive arena but I’d love to play a Tiny-Desk concert one day!
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Destin Conrad & Jhené Aiko – I just think we would make beautiful music together.
Where can our listeners follow and support your music? (Website,Spotify, IG, links)

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
More collaborations, more shows, more videos and just very great new music that is a lot more sophisticated I‘d like to say! Eventually I will also start working on my first album I guess but for now I am focusing on singles after dropping my debut EP last year – you should check that out btw hehe 😉
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
My versatility! I have so many more sides to me musically that I am yet to share so I can’t wait for you all to hear what’s to come! Also I try to express myself as authentically as possible by taking most parts of the process into my own hands, so I hope that people really take in the creative decisions I make and all the details in my work.
