Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Sivan Amran

SIVAN

Sivan Amran is a musician, bass player and singer-songwriter. Her debut album was independently produced and released in 2016 and garnered high praise from the critics of the local music scene. Amran has a dark, warm feminine voice, accompanied by heavy dominant bass notes, significantly influenced by musicians like Tori Amos, Fiona Apple and Pj Harvey. She does not hesitate to break the boundaries and explore different musical genres, then blend it all together in order to create something new and make it her own.

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

The red double cassette player my father bought.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

It started with realizing I could sing, then learning to play the guitar, followed by performing the songs of musicians I loved and listened to. After a little while, I started writing spontaneously, as if everything I had absorbed from my favorite musicians began pouring out of me.

What’s the story behind your current music project?

My current music project is my second EP, titled ‘Arched Path’. I’ve already released three tracks from it, and the full EP will be out officially by the end of the year. The songs are deeply personal, touching on different aspects of my life. “Migraine”, the latest single, is not only about the physical condition but also about the relationship one develops with pain and the lessons that can be learned from it.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

Alternative blues, alternative rock with seasoning of electronic elements.

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

Learning how to meditate completely changed my process. It helped me shift my state of mind from focusing on “what will they enjoy listening to” to being in the present moment and simply letting the music and lyrics flow out naturally.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

It varies. It can be my entire studio setup (gear and DAW), an acoustic guitar and a simple recording app on my phone, or it can be just a piece of paper and a pen.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

I simply admire Jordan Rakei. I particularly love his vocal texture and how he manages to be so creatively versatile and still maintain a very unique and soulful signature.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

When big things happen in your life and put everything else under perspective, it also makes you more creative because you realize there are bigger things in life than if the next song that you will write will be perfect. I allow myself to “make mistakes” in writing, and I care less and less about other people’s opinions in my creative process.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

I hope they feel seen.

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

That the power of it is beyond measures. It heals, it bonds.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

Royal Albert Hall. That would be more than a dream come true.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

I would absolutely love to collaborate with Linda Perry, the powerhouse producer and former lead singer of 4 Non Blondes. As a leading producer and songwriter, her unique technique of adlibbing during the writing process has impacted my own creativity immensely. Furthermore, she has always been a deeply important role model for me, particularly as a gay woman in the industry.

I would like to tour Europe and finish my next album (already finished 3 songs!).

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

I simply hope they will listen to the music and enjoy it.
