Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Martin Seznec

Martin Seznec, a fan of folk and rock, has been quietly composing in his teenage bedroom since he was 13. In 2022, he crossed paths with the studios 4ass et plus. One year later, everything sped up. His desire to play and the people he met allowed him to compose for comic book artist Alex Inker, perform at Run Ar Puns in November 2024, and more recently open for Sarah Mac Coy at the CAC. He also met videographer Romain Le Bleis, who shot the music video for his first single “Is It Home?”.
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
Growing up, I had long blond hair, most pepole thought I was a girl at first sight. Then, when i were about 5 years old, I saw “smells like teen spirit”, the video clip, on my family’s computer. It was a shock ! I saw this grown up man, long blond hair, screaming and shouting with so much energy, it really did hypnotysed me. I think it might be my first real memory about music. This band was so good.
How did your passion for creating music begin?

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
It is folk, bluesy raw yet modern and carried by vocal harmonies I make myself.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Music is only a feeling. You have to be true in the making If you want someone to feel it, because in the end we are all the same.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
I only need my guitar and my voice to start. Once I got the song I need to play it live multiple times. And only then I’ll record it on abelton live. I need abelton to stack multiple voices. The true advantage when youre a solo folk singer, is that you moove fast and don’t spend too much money on recording.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Night ride-The growlers
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
My music is the reflection of the world around me and the reality I live in. I think that when youre trying to be honest in your work, there ain’t no borders between the personal and the art. Mabe this is why a lot of dedicated artists loose their mind in the process.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I always have been flabbergasted by the feeling that an artist truly understands me. You know when you are listening to a song and think “wow, it’s really what i’m feeling right now”. This is what I am trying to give to pepole when I do this.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
That nothing is for granted.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
“Les vielles charrues” in brittany
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Bob dylan, it would make me learn a lot.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
My goal is to truly make great music, and be able to live on it. My real next step is to play on bigger stages.
