Formula Indie Sessions Interview with Euan Blackman
Hey I’m Euan, a Liverpool-based multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter. I’ve been releasing music for the past 5 years and have earnt support from BBC Radio 1, Radio 6 Music, Billboard, and Time, alongside praise from tastemakers Jack Saunders and Mike Shinoda. I just released the new single Why Do I Feel So Bad? – my sweetest production and most sunshine-fuelled pop release to date. It was produced and recorded in my Liverpool flat during the dark northern winter of 2025, the track reaches for brighter, more summery textures and offers the first taste of my forthcoming EP, Four Songs For Dancing.
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
I can remember being extremely little watching Status Quo play at Ragley Hall, my first ever gig. I was holding an inflatable guitar and thinking it was the coolest thing ever.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
The passion for creating music happened in my late teens. I always played guitar and just wanted to be the best guitar player I could possibly be – but there came a point where songs and the craft of writing stories and melodies became the main passion. I also fell into music production and love making little beats and instrumentals on Ableton. The notion of having nothing, and then suddenly having a fully realised song and production is still magic to me
What’s the story behind your current music project?
Overall with this track and the whole of the “four songs for dancing” EP, I noticed I had a few tracks I’d been working on which had a common thread of being more groove driven than my other songs.
I had been listening to a lot more soul, like Sly & The Family Stone and Shuggie Otis, which I think comes through with these tracks. I’m not saying they’re soul records, it’s still pop – but there’s a vocal/harmonic thing which just reminds me of summer.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
My new EP is: music to listen to when you’re getting ready for a night out.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Finish every idea, even if you think it is bad. Just the process of finishing your songs and productions is so beneficial.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
Songwriting-wise I keep it. simple and organic; pen and paper and a guitar. Production-wise it gets a little more complex: Macbook, few different mics, guitars, Casio keyboard, banjo, pedals, loads of VST synths and plugins.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
I think most songwriting is rooted in personal experience, whether that’s your own, or just what you’ve heard/consumed from your friends and family. If it’s not at least a bit real, what’s the point?
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I think songs have the power to remind you that you’re not alone in whatever it is you’re going through. 1000s of others have experienced the same pain/joy.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
The most important lesson has been don’t forget the reason you started. You can get so bogged down in chasing virality and the industry that you forget to just enjoy playing an instrument and writing songs.

The Ryman
