Formula Indie Sessions Interview with Shoshan Dunamis
Introduction of the project
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
When I was six, I moved from the US to Germany. I got a cassette recorder back then – the kind with a mic on the side. I’d come up with songs and record them on the cassette to make sure I wouldn’t forget them. I still write my songs that way today. Just with my phone.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I’m not even sure if there was a specific starting point or if I just grew into it over the years. I’ve been writing songs since I was a little girl. I guess the passion was always there, then.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
In 2022, I had a bit of a breakthrough as a musician. I had a track in the iTunes Dance charts and I was releasing music monthly, and my music was being played on the radio—and then I got really sick. I was diagnosed with three immune disorders that were supposed to be incurable. I ended up spending almost two years in the hospital.
At first, I thought it was the end of my career and the life I knew. But I’ve always been a person of deep faith and have always believed that Jesus Christ can heal. In the end, after two years of struggle, my symptoms disappeared overnight. That was in January 2025.
The music I wrote is about all of that. It’s about my relationship with Jesus and my belief that he has good intentions for us, about believing in yourself and not giving up on your dreams. It’s about finding joy in life, no matter what the circumstances are. I remain optimistic, even though I’ve been through a lot of bad things, and I want to help others do the same.
Once it was clear that the symptoms weren’t coming back, I went into the recording studio and recorded 28 songs in 2025, and I planned a small tour around my hometown of Wiesbaden in Germany. Now I’m releasing these songs one by one as Singles.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
I write english and german songs. The English songs have a bit of an ’80s vibe, as I used a lot of synths when recording them. If you want to compare it to anyone, then maybe it’s somewhere between Sia’s lyrics and The Weeknd’s sound. I’d say my music is motivational and uplifting. I like to be the friend who helps you through a crisis. It’s a mix of synth pop, gospel pop and alt pop.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
I’ve learned to produce music that inspires and motivates me, rather than worrying about whether it might sell well and that art thrives on the freedom to experiment and, sometimes, to break the rules.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
I work with Logic Pro, and other than that, I like to experiment with different microphones. For my latest productions, for example, we recorded all the songs simultaneously using two different microphones to create an even warmer and more authentic sound in doubling. Generally, I like to work ear candy elements like claves, experimental sounds, and a tambourine comes into play in most of my recordings. Otherwise, of course, synth keys and synth bass.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Charlotte Cardin – The Way We Touch
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
I’ve been through quite a few tough times in my life. As silly as it might sound, I probably wrote most of my songs to motivate myself during difficult moments and to reassure myself that I can make it through. When you write songs, you write about topics that are on your mind, that move you, or about things you’re trying to process and communicate through music.
So my experiences have a huge impact on my music—both the motivational songs and the ones about how happy I am. These are all emotions I carry within me, things I’ve experienced, or thoughts I simply wanted to put down on paper. Things that have shaped me, that make me who I am as a person, and that define me as an artist. I think at some point I told myself, “If it helps you, then maybe it’ll help others, too.” And that’s when I started releasing music.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
You’re awesome just the way you are, and you shouldn’t let anyone convince you otherwise. Life is actually beautiful if you manage to see it through the right lens. We all face challenges in life, but these are there to help us grow, not to break us. So even if you feel like you’re fighting an uphill battle, remember that God is always on your side.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Just being myself is more than enough.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
I’m not just creative when it comes to music. I also really enjoy dancing and designing stage sets. I would really like to plan a big show and go on a stadium tour.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
There are so many artists that I really like. But it would probably be James Arthur, Ed Sheeran, or Peter Fox. I think it’s because they come across as down-to-earth to me, and I find that very appealing. And because I like their music and their stories, and I think our voices would go well together.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
Reach more people, play more live shows and gain international recognition. That would be great.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
That I’m just like them. A completely normal person who has ups and downs, just like everyone else, and who uses her talent and experiences to help others. We’re all in the same boat. Everyone needs a pep talk sometimes, everyone needs a hug now and then, and everyone needs a reminder of the beautiful things in life every once in a while.
