Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Lateral

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

I dont remember myself, but have been told that when I was really small I would get up and start singing at family gatherings… very strange as I consider myself a terrible singer now and the thought of standing up and performing like that is my worst nightmare!

Other than than I remember listening to odd songs and being transfixed.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

I started playing guitar as a teenager after getting into Indie music really hard. I wasnt content to sit and enjoy it, I had to understand it completely from the inside out (Im like that with other things) and so bought a guitar, learnt to play my favourite songs and then later when I got into electronic music the natural step was to start creating it myself, trying to work out how artists got thier sounds to feel like they did.

What’s the story behind your current music project?

At the moment Im working on singles, I am in a bit of a ‘clean out my harddrive’ moment. Found some unfinished projects I forgot I had and Im trying to see if they can be taken forward. Got a couple of bits on which I have managed to update which I am excited about releasing. Also a collaboration with Natty Lou which drops on Liquicty in August!

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

Its uptempo, hopefully goes hard and is hopefully melodic!

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

Once you get past the phase of trying to imitate your favourite artists (which we all do at the start) you must must must start to create music that feels right to you personally. Do not chase the algorithm, do not try to make a tune that sounds like another tune, try and make music that excites you.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

Cubase forever – I started on it and cannot be bothered with any more learning curves. Software its the usual suspects – Serum 2 and probably the same plugins everyone has! Splice for random samples and inspiration.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

Tough one… in practical terms I have a kid now so studio time is a bit limited compared to how it was before… In terms of workflow this teaches you to make decisions faster and procastrinate less. Probably a good lesson!

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

I just want people to have a good time to it. Thats pretty much it. No messages, theres enough of that. I just want to see some gunfingers go up at the drop!

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

If you want to get good at something, there are no shortcuts!

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

I havent touched a set of decks for awhile due to time constraints so this really isnt in my thinking. What I love (as a big introvert anyway!) is being in studio, circulating my music and watching others drop it on a big stage

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

I guess Im being predictable here but Sub Focus, this guys musicality is insane.

Where can our listeners follow and support your music? (Website,Spotify, IG, links)

Spotify, @lateraldnb on Insta and @lateraldrumandbass on TikTok

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?

Id love to get an official remix down for one of the tracks i love. Last year I bootlegged Silence by Delerium and it got Radio 1 airplay and was dropped at some huge festivals and big stages. I didnt get the offical remix,  but would love an equivalent. Theres a bunch of tracks Id like to do from back in the day, such as Promises by Nero (currently working on a bootleg of this too!)

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

That they like my music (!) I also love fan messages, I read and reply to all of them.

If you want here you can add a representative Youtube video to insert below the interview 🙂

Here is another bootleg i did last year with Natty Lou. Had such fun with this and its still going off!
