Formula Indie Sessions : Interview with Kara

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
When I was little, my parents used to listen to the Bee Gees, Boney M, Abba… that got me into it straight away.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
In my sixth-form year, on the first day I was at my best friend’s house. His dad had a studio flat.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
Nothing in particular. My inspiration just comes to me; I don’t plan it.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
C’est du son pop, dance music avec une touche personnelle qui le distingue des autres sons What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
I realised that I couldn’t always ask someone else to play for me whenever inspiration struck. So I learnt to compose and play music on my own.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process? FL Studio, my keyboard and my electric guitar.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I listen to all kinds of music. From jazz to classical, as well as dance, techno, hard rock, Indie, world music and so on.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
Through the music my parents listened to. The styles of music my great-uncles and great-aunts listened to. And also, Malagasy (from Madagascar) musical culture.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I just want listeners to enjoy my music, to be able to dance to it – or even just nod their heads along – and to smile as they listen.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Perseverance. Nothing is easy in music, especially these days. You can have immense talent and incredible inspiration, yet nobody will notice you despite your best efforts.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Where ten of the living dance non-stop to my beats. Whether it’s at a festival or in a club, my main aim is to satisfy the audience. No matter how many of them there are.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
I welcome all artists with open arms, as I don’t have any particular preferences. We just need to be on the same wavelength, that’s all.
