Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with NY’AIRA

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
The first album and movie that was gifted to me was Brandy’s Never Say Never and Double Platinum featuring her & Diana Ross. I studied them almost daily, from choreography to musical arrangements. I knew this was my pass and gift even to the point of jamming on a piano, putting on concerts in my living room.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I was three years old when I first started singing, more specifically jamming to the R&B station radio alarms from the beginning of my day. Eventually leading to my first major stage production of the play Annie, beating 600 girls. Unfortunately not receiving a callback due to a lack of dance training, but I knew this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my days.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
I’m undergoing an entire rebrand and shifting into the Alternative Rock/ R&B space! Genysis was the end and the beginning of who I’m becoming, now ripping the bandaid off of everyone’s expectations and showing who I am as a vocalist.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
eclectic , raw, ear candy.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music? There’s nothing new under the sun, but rather how you tell the story is what truly makes
an impact on the listener.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process? My notebook or Iphone notes, Logic Pro/ Protools for my personal sessions, and
portable mic.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
A lot of Larry June! He really helps me visualize the life I’m headed to and staying focused. Plus some old Drake too.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision? I’m an artist who wears their heart on their sleeve. It truly comes out in the music and
vocal arrangement. I may go through the consistent battles of identity and staying true to who I am, but that all makes for better music.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
That while you’re going through it, you’re growing through it. Whatever your “It” is…
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Being you is a job, and everything about you is a business. You are the CEO of your life, and your catalog is your “investment portfolio”.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Rolling Loud or Woodstock if we brought it Back!
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why? Teena Marie- Her ability to captivate you with musicianship and voice altogether is
amazing. She’s such a powerhouse in her own right.
Where can our listeners follow and support your music? (Website,Spotify, IG, links) All platforms @nyaira and @nyairacollins. Follow the songstress at nyairacollins.com
Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
Opening for a legendary rock band, and joining on a European tour.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way? That I’m just as weird as the next creative, in the best possible way!
