Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Dr. Henry Band

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
My earliest memory connected to music was hearing my dad sing bass in the choir.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
It started with learning the keyboard as my first instrument before I discovered the power of the bass guitar.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
The stories behind my music are based on my personal life experiences since moving to Canada from Togo — the culture shock, the dating scene, and adapting to a new social life.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
I would describe my sound as a fusion of Afrobeat, jazz, soul, and groove-driven music inspired by real-life experiences. It combines deep rhythms, rich melodies, and emotional storytelling influenced by African culture, modern social life, and jazz improvisation.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
One thing I’ve learned that completely changed the way I make music is understanding that music is not just about technique, but about emotion and storytelling. I realized that people connect more deeply with honesty, feeling, and real-life experiences than with just complex playing.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
I mostly use the keyboard when creating my music, especially when it comes to melodies.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I am really loving the song “Sweet Mary” by Richard Bona
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
My personal experiences have deeply shaped my music and artistic vision. Moving from Togo to Canada exposed me to culture shock, new social environments, which all influenced how I write and express myself. I turn real-life emotions and situations into music, using them to create honest, relatable stories.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
Joy and peace of mind—never take life too seriously.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Music is teaching me so far that everything is possible
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
It will be Montreux Jazz Festival
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
I would love to collaborate with Richard Bona. I opened for him last year in 2025 at the Winnipeg Jazz Festival with my band. When I started learning bass, I looked up to him—he has always been my mentor and a major inspiration in my musical journey.
