What is your earliest memory connected to music?

Sinead: I have very vivid memories of playing Singstar and Guitar Hero when I was growing up! It was honestly such a great introduction to the world of music and opened my eyes to all the different genres and artists that exist. It also taught me about the feelings songs can create.

Edie:

How did your passion for creating music begin?

Sinead: I had played guitar and bass for many years but never been part of an actual project. One day at work (a few years ago), my friend casually asked if I wanted to play bass on a demo he was making. We hung out, and he showed me all the songs he had written, and I fell in love with them straight away. Eventually, I joined his band, and everything clicked into place for me. I’ve been non-stop playing and writing music pretty much every day since. Pursuing creativity feels like the only choice for me. It brings so much joy and pushes me to learn more and be better in so many ways.

What’s the story behind your current music project?

Sinead: Binsad was created by Alex (our guitarist and producer) and me when our previous project ended. We were looking for an outlet to channel all of our creative energy, so we started writing and recording demos. When we felt ready to show the songs to other people, the first person we thought of was Adam (drummer/manager). We had played music with Adam over the years in various projects, and were always so enamoured with him, so we asked him to join. Alex suggested reaching out to Edie (guitarist) after seeing them in a previous project and being so blown away by their work. We all met up and got to know each other better, and now we’re binsad!

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

Sinead: I would say that our music is sweet but harsh. It’s soft but loud. There are a lot of dynamic changes that showcase gritty, intense moments, but also more reflective, sweet, emotional elements. If you like rock, shoegaze and lo-fi indie, you’ll like our music.

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

Sinead: To not care what other artists are doing or what other people think! We only create music that we like and feel strongly about. We try not to use other songs or artists as influences, and instead, just sit and create and build tracks based on what we think works and sounds good. I would say that we live completely in our own world!

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

Sinead: Our guitar pedals are essential to the binsad sonic aesthetic. Edie’s guitar pedals are sparkling and glittery to create a wash of noise that complements Alex’s distorted, loud and harsh guitar sounds. My bass tone is completely dialled with a very precise mix of distortion and compression to create bass that is gritty and hard-hitting but doesn’t get lost in the music. We wouldn’t sound the same without our pedals!

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

Sinead: There are SO many I want to say! I really want to shout out the Sydney scene because we are truly surrounded by so many incredible artists like Creeping Jenny, Cherry Rype, Our Mutual Friend and Bennetts Grove. We also love our friends from Newy Stagger, Trophy Wyfe and Old House <3

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

Sinead: For me, the album is entirely based on my personal experiences, so the album pretty much serves as my journal. The creation of our album ‘Pearl’ was really my way of understanding who I am, so the songs are full of very vulnerable moments and lessons I’ve learned from living through different things. I learnt how to express how I feel and channel my emotions and experiences into cathartic musical moments. The ethos of the band is: there is always light within the darkness. We always want the takeaway from our shows and music to be a message of positivity and hope because that’s exactly how I see each day.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

Sinead: I hope people can hear the sincerity and honesty in the lyrics and connect with the message of hope and healing.

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

Sinead: To be brave. To push myself to try new things. Most importantly, to have fun!

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

Sinead: Enmore Theatre really is the dream venue for any Sydney band. I’d love to be part of an Aussie music festival like Laneway or Yours & Owls! I’d also love to play at an international festival like The Great Escape or Glastonbury someday!

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

Sinead: Ooooh, good question! There’s a UK band called Sorry who I really admire. I absolutely love their style of production and would love to be in the studio with them to see how they create their sound. There’s also an incredible Sydney-based artist called Cherry Rype who we are in love with. She’s insanely talented, and we’d absolutely die to collaborate with her.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?

Sinead: To create more and more music that we’re proud of! I really want to push myself to explore some new sounds and techniques. I’d love to learn a new instrument and be able to incorporate that into our sound somehow. I’d also really love to play in parts of Australia I’ve never played before, like Adelaide and Perth.

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

Sinead: That we just want to have fun and build a community of people who share the same love for music and positivity as us.
