Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Amara Paige

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

My earliest memory connected to music is being part of a musical when I was young. I was a part of Les Miserables, and played the role of young Cosette, where I sang Castle on a Cloud. Through that show I met so many amazing musicians and people I would work with throughout the coming years.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

I have always loved playing music, and found my passion for writing when I met my mentor, a country artist who writes his own original music. By working with him, I have been inspired to write two original songs, called ‘Break Up Song,’ and ‘Growin’ Up.’

What’s the story behind your current music project?

At the moment, I’m writing a third original song, called ‘Mess You Made.’ It has been inspired by the chorus of Olivia Rodrigo’s newest song, ‘Drop Dead,’ and by Megan Moroney’s style of music. It follows the journey of a toxic teenage relationship, and the process of healing afterwards, blending raw emotions with country-pop inspired lyrics.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

I would describe myself as a country-pop artist, inspired by Taylor Swift’s country albums, Ed Sheeran, Olivia Rodrigo and Luke Combs, with an aim to blend a hint of country music into a pop focused sound.

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

At the beginning of my musical journey, I found it difficult to include emotional vulnerability in my original songs. However, after working alongside many talented musicians and hearing the stories behind their music, I realised that the most meaningful and impactful songs are often inspired by real emotions and personal experiences. Through this, I learned that in order to create honest and powerful music, I needed to allow myself to be emotionally open in my songwriting, and I believe that this idea has had a massive impact on my songwriting over the past few years.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

The most essential tool in my creative process is my guitar, which I use for my songwriting and live performances. My process begins by experimenting with chord progressions and melodies acoustically before developing lyrics around the stories I want to tell. Alongside the guitar, I rely on my phone to record voice memos whenever I come up with lyric ideas, melodies, or chord progressions before they are forgotten. I also use music streaming platforms and social media to discover inspiration from artists such as Olivia Rodrigo, Megan Moroney, and Ed Sheeran, whose songwriting styles influence my own writing style.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

At the moment, I have been a big fan of Jake Davey, who is a country pop artist that I work closely with. My favourite of his songs is ‘Made,’ which is a song that explores the joys of life. His music inspires my own, particularly the way he blends storytelling with uplifting themes.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

As a musician, I draw heavily from my personal experiences when shaping my songwriting. I aim to create music that reflects emotions I’ve felt in the past, using those moments as the foundation for relatable storytelling. Rather than writing from imagination alone, I focus on translating real feelings into lyrics and melodies, allowing my songs to capture human emotions in a more authentic way.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

I hope that listeners relate to my songs and to enjoy the music I have written. I aim for my works to feel real, so people can connect my experiences to their own while also appreciating the sound and storytelling.

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

Music has taught me so many amazing skills, but the most important of them is the value of professional connections, as well as genuine human interactions. Building relationships with other musicians has shown me that real connection is just as important as the music.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

I would love to tour around the world and do small shows around Australia, and then Europe and America. I would also love to play at the Laneway Festival in Melbourne Australia, and any other festivals around the world.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

I would love to collaborate with Ed Sheeran, because he was the artist that inspired me to start playing guitar and pursue my dreams as a vocalist and songwriter. I’ve seen him live twice, and both times I was blown away at his performance. He has always been one of my biggest inspirations and favourite artists.
