Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Rebel Messiah

Interview with Ed Savoy – guitarist – Rebel Messiah
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
When I was around 3 years old, every time the band America’s song “A Horse with No Name” came on the radio, I’d press my ear up against the stereo speaker.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I started playing guitar at age 12 and started writing my own songs almost immediately.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
Lead singer Kevin Callahan approached me to start a project way back in 2008 when I was in a band called Bullistic. Ten years later in 2018 our paths crossed again and the timing was right.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Maybe a cross between Judas Priest and Godsmack.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
People do not buy full length albums anymore so it makes more sense to release singles and EP’s more frequently than a full album every 18 – 24 months.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
The creative process is still very organic for us. We get in a rehearsal space together and jam on song ideas until we have something worth recording.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Crystal Witch just released a song called Hey Father that’s pretty cool. Full disclosure, I play guitar in that band too. ha, ha, ha
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
I write in minor keys, darker sounding music.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
An escape from the day to day chaos and worries in life.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Make music for the love of it and don’t expect to make money.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Madison Square Garden in New York City, which is probably everyone else’s too.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Jimmy Page who in my opinion is one of the best songwriters and producers of all time.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
Growing our audience & reaching people around the world.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
We’re everyday average people making music for everyday average people. It might sound cliche but we are a band for the working class.
