Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Gopherbroke

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
Listening to, and then singing in the church choit.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
The chucrh choir, school choir and band, and the The Beatles!!
What’s the story behind your current music project?
Gopherbroke is in a rebuild process, with a new guitar player and an additional trumpet. We will be out in fron of people this summer. I am also working on a solo project of original music with “special guests”
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Blues, soul and rock n roll, with a great horn section. And we have fun!!
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Play for the crowd, no natter the size, as if it were a full auditorium! Have fun, and they will too.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
I don’t write music, so everything is in m y head. I can hear the entire arrangement, but have to somehow get the ideas out to the rest of the band. Some AI programs help with that, not as a finished product, but as a guide.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
No favorites. I am primarily a blues fan
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
I am old enough to have seen all the great bands of the 60s and 70s. I try to write lyrics about things I know or have experienced..
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
Truth in the lyrics, soul in the sound
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
I am blessed to have minimal talent and need to use it until I can’t. There is always someone better or not as good as you. Get over it.Be yoiu,
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Chicago Blues Festival
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Paul Butterfield. My harmonica hero. I would like to have learned at the feet of the master.
