Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Desi

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
Reply: since I was 5 years old I was listening to the radio but esecially going to see my Godfather’s band perform.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
Reply– The passion just seemed to be there. I was lucky to know what I wanted to do with my life at an early age. Music was one of the beauties of my Italian family. My Grandfather, Godfather, cousins were all musicians from my mother’s side. They came to America from Naples, Italy thru Ellis Island NY and wanted to bring some of the Italian traditions, like music with them.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
Reply. There are 2 current pursuits. 1. My Rock “Operalet” (I coined that term meaning Rock Opera with Ballet/Dance). There are 9 songs on the CD with a storyline that it follows. 2. My Piano Concerto #1. I studied classical with 3 great teachers and ever since I heard Keith Emerson’s Concerto I said I have to do that.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Reply The Rock “Operalet” is Progressive Rock with a philsophical undertones. My Piano Concerto is obviously Classical
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Reply: Performance wise was Auto Suggestion (hypnosis) which I learned from 3 different people. In producing it is when I discovered stage placement and time delay in the head phones and when I got a room simulator. Of course DAWs.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
Reply: Obviously piano. I use Synthogy Ivory II Steinway American Concert D. Strings are a big part of my productions and I use multiple sounds from the Vienna Symphonic Library. Also from my Yamaha Motif. The biggest thing was Apple’s Pro Logic DAW. I was using Logic even before Apple purchased them years ago
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Reply. Keith Emerson for Prog Rock, Oscar Peterson and Hiromi for Jazz and Yuju Wang for classical.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
Reply: My dad had many movie soundtacks in the house when I was growing up which I can hear a taste of that in my music. And my Rock “Operalet” was inspired by my studies with Hilda Charlton (enlightened teacher) and the Hilarion Series of books.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
Reply: I always thought and wanted my music to take people to places in their mind. Where listeners could see the vision or message in the song.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Reply: It lets you touch the other side – Heaven.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Reply: I envisioned the Rock “Operalet” performed with Cirque du Soleil. They would add the visual impact that would catapult it in a live show. I know, pie in the sky wish but you can’t blame someone for dreaming. Theatre style venue that would accomodate dance and a band. I see the band & dancers performing on the same stage like Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Reply: Freddie Mercury – Queen

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
Reply: Currently I’m pursuing a Ballet Company to perform my Rock “Operalet”. From a marketing perspective, they have an audience, venue, can do the choreography and I would be bringing original material in a Prog Rock style to their classic repetoire. That should expand their reach to new audiences.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
Reply: That my music could transcend them. Music you SEE!
