Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Jah Bast

Greetings and love,
I am jah Bast, aka Old Owl, aka Wings of Time, a swiss based singer, poly-musician, engineer and producer of 2 small indepenant labels of Spiritual Raw Roots Reggae music.
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
I can’t answer this question cause i can’t find in my memory when it started, probably when my mother was pregnant of me. She always listen to many kinds of music
How did your passion for creating music begin?
First I always loved to sing. As a teenager, I started to write lyrics and composed my first song
What’s the story behind your current music project?
My current project is something that goes beyond myself and my ego from far.
For approx 25 years i started transmitting songs, releases, etc. and form that time my purpose is spiritual. Music can open heart and soul, and change a life, i am la iving exemple of this. But i never really promoted this music, now times have changed, good vibes must be spread to maximum people, not to only a few.
Every single thing is possible through Jah love and I’m trying to transmit the love i feel through music. Conscious music, words that awake with harmony, Giving thanks and praises, that’s what I’m looking for with this project.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Raw Roots reggae, Organic, spiritual, Rastafarian, african, where rythmic, drums and bass are the foundations, in harmony with the melody and words.
Im not searching for a proper sound recording technicaly like the standards nowadays, with music with full volume and limiters, it doesn’t interest me.
I love Magnetic and analog sounds, because they are not perfect, like human beings, but they are alive and warm, and sometimes, mistakes becomes the magical touch.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
This difference between magnetised music and fully computer music. The approach is way too different. I used to work with fully analog, no computer at all in the studio back in the days with ancient bredrins. Now I’m often alone at the studio so it would be way too much complicated to record fully analog strictly on tape machine alone. So I edit a bit on it.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
Inspiration from the Most I
Voice, drums, percussions, bass, guitar, piano, organ, flutes, fostex E16 and edited a bit with ableton before mixing but right now i want to say a good health, because I’m in a bad shape during few months again Only Jah know
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I love the way sound Pachyman with his roots reggae songs
Eeyun Delroy Perkins with his Waggle Dance Records has his own touch too
And for sure my ancients brothers from Darker shades of Roots Records
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
Totaly like many i think
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
“Search deep within yourself, and you will find the Holy temple”
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Open your heart and mind
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
As reggae music is shaped for sound systems, all roots reggae sound system, and there’are not many nowadays.
In terms of festival, Montreux jazz is a really good one but i don’t dream about it, and festivals or sounds in a beautiful environnement.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Oh in the past Dennis Brown, Augustus pablo and much more, but now there are still so much great artists young or old, difficult to name one, if i try: Willie williams, Ken Boothe, Twinkle brothers, etc.
