Introduction of the project

Coppia is an electronic project from Eskilstuna, Sweden (formed in 2022), consisting of Peter and Louise Marchione. It began as a shared way of writing music about what happens between people – relationships, friction, closeness, and everything in between. The sound can be described as driving synth pop with an indie feel.

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

Louise: Riding in the car with my parents, who always played Mireille Mathieu, and singing along in madeup French!

Peter: For me as well, my earliest memories are connected to car rides. In my case it was various ’60s music compilations, and Umberto Tozzi’s album Tu, which had the biggest impact.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

Louise: Honestly, it was probably coincidence. Peter was already making music, and then I got curious too. We started experimenting together, and suddenly we met Johannes and Daniel and formed Thermostatic.

Peter: Already at the age of nine or ten, a friend and I were experimenting with tape recorders — playing them at the wrong speeds, backwards, and cutting things together. Not very musical, but a lot of fun. Making music more seriously started during my teenage years, mainly together with a close friend, when we began forming bands and actually writing songs.

What’s the story behind your current music project?

Louise: It was more like: “Should we try to make a song together?” Without wanting to kill each other… haha.

Peter: Exactly that. We were just going to try something and ended up with one song. Then another… and another. And it just kept going — and we haven’t hit each other a single time.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

Louise: Synthheavy pop with energy! (At least these days.) And then we usually add something a bit melancholic and slightly twisted in the background.

Peter: Exactly — electronic pop that we try to disguise!

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

Louise: Chasing the feeling instead of perfection. If a song captures a specific vibe — like that latenight, slightly empty feeling — then it’s done, even if it’s not perfect.

Peter: That you never actually finish a mix — you abandon it and move on.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

Louise: It’s all about finding a sound you fall in love with. It can really be any synth. But I love Roland synths…

Peter: We’ll never be able to sell our physical Roland Juno106, even though we have three or four different software clones in the computer. The Elektron Analog Four is a favourite piece of hardware, and Cherry Audio’s plugins are used on pretty much every song.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

Louise: If I’m only allowed to say one song, I’ll say “I’m In Love” by Mercy Girl.

Peter: Baby, Don’t Hurt Yourself recently released a single from 2007 on streaming services for the very first time. I am infinitely happy about that.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

Louise: You’re always inspired by listening to other people’s music. You think, “I want to try something like that too,” and then it never turns out anything like it anyway… haha.

Peter: Hopefully our way of failing to plagiarize other people’s songs is what creates Coppia’s sound.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

Louise: Honestly, I’m happiest if they like our songs at all — and if they want to hear more.

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

Louise: That the right feeling always wins in the long run. At least for me.

Peter: Music is a given frame of reference for me — a timeline that I attach everything that happens, and has happened, to. If someone mentions a year, for example, I immediately connect it to a song, an artist, or an album. Pretty silly when you think about it, haha.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

Louise: It would be amazing to play outside of Sweden, for example!

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

Peter: Oh, in theory there are many — but maybe cEvin Key, his approach to electronic music has impressed me for decades. Though… if it actually happened, I’d probably get terrified and run off to hide.

Louise: I’ve had a soft spot for Marc Almond for a long time! Collaborating with him would be completely insane… haha.

Peter: Yeah, Marc Almond would be great to hang out with. He seems lovely.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?

Louise: To release an album!

Peter: … we are actually working on a bunch of tunes so this album dream should come true.

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

Louise: That they enjoy what we do and want to see us live. It’s always fun to get out there and play!
