Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Matthew Moore

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
When I was like 6 or 7 I had a teacher who would get us to play music in class and when he asked who wanted to play the snare drum with brushes my hand shot up cause for some reason I thought I could do it.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I had two friends in high school who played guitar and bass and they had a band with one of their older brothers who played drums. One day after school the older brother wasn’t there so they showed me how to play a basic beat so I could jam with them. I loved it and never stopped playing. I was in and the brother was out.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
I was always a drummer playing in bands then a music producer and engineer. But I always wrote songs and dreamed of doing it myself but I didn’t think I could because I thought of myself as a drummer. Then one day I just had to give it a go so I did.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
It’s an old school sound with a mix of folk, country and rock n roll.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Don’t over think it. Most of the time it’s best to go with your first instinct.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
I use pro tools to record. I’ll put down a good scratch vocal and guitar then play drums to it too I get the right drum take. After that I’ll go back and do more vocals and acoustics to the drum take. Then I get friends to play other instruments on it and fill in the cracks and give it some color.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I Want You by Bob Dylan
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
My lyrics are all from my own life experience and I’m good at imagining characters and stories.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I’ve made a lot of mistakes which I write about. I also write about love or what I think love could be like. I believe in romance, redemption and underdogs and write about these things a lot. Most people can relate.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
It gives me purpose and a path to follow for my life. Most of the time I don’t know where it will take me but it’s been working out so far. If it wasn’t for music I’d be in a lot more trouble.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
The Albert Hall wouldn’t be too bad lol.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Having Jimi Hendrix cover one of my songs like he did to a couple of Dylan’s songs would be amazing.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
I’m working on my next album plus an acoustic record. I just moved to Texas where I’m putting another studio together so I can work on songs anytime I want.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
I walk my own path. I don’t do well with the crowd.
