Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with DLL

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
When I was very young, around five or six, I constantly heard melodies and words in my head. I thought this was something that happened to everyone. When I asked my friends at school about it, they didn’t really understand what I meant. I even asked if they had written any songs of their own, which felt a bit awkward at the time. Looking back, I think that was my first real encounter with music.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
Once I realized that the melodies and words I heard in my head could be repeated and shaped into short verses and choruses, I knew I needed to learn the process of songwriting. I started learning about chords and researching how the artists I listened to recorded and produced their music. That’s when I realized music was a life choice for me.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
I see my music project as an ongoing journey. I both produce and release all of my own songs, but I also stay very busy working on other artists’ music. Finding enough time to focus on producing and releasing my own material is my biggest challenge.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
The best way to describe my music is that the melodies are always catchy. No matter the genre I’m working in, I try to make the lyrics and melodies memorable.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
The beauty of music is that you never stop learning. I’m always experimenting and testing new ideas, but the sound I end up with is what I feel in my heart. I don’t try to copy anyone else’s sound. In music and in the studio, learning never stops, which is why I try many methods and keep the ones I truly love.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process? I use a variety of instruments, but my main instruments are piano and synthesizers.
My best friend in production is Pro Tools. I work on all of my projects from start to finish in Pro Tools because I love it, it forces you to create a sound rather than relying on stock sounds that many software programs have nowadays.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I listen to a lot of indie artists, and lately I’ve been listening to many independent Cumbia records from South America. I think they are creating very interesting concepts within the Cumbia genre.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
When I produce my own music, I believe about 90% of it comes from my life experiences. Those experiences translate into the emotions I feel at the moment I’m writing or producing a song. The remaining 10% is experimental and fictional, especially when it comes to the lyrics.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work? I want people to feel happy, energized and inspired after listening to my music.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far? As mentioned before, music teaches you something every day. From the beginning, I learned that if you want to be a musician, producer, or artist, you have to work hard on your craft. Dedication is key.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at? It would be a dream to play at a very big venue where people sing my songs along with me. That would be an incredible experience.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
I’ve had the pleasure of working with some of the world’s greatest musicians and singers. You always learn something valuable from those experiences. I hope to continue collaborating with top artists, and if I had ever had the chance to be in the studio with Michael Jackson, it would have been amazing.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
I would love to spend more time on my own music so I can release songs more often and connect with people more frequently. Every time I release music, thankfully it
connects well with listeners. I would also love to promote my music more and visit countries where people listen to my music but I haven’t had the chance to go yet.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
I want people to have fun and feel filled with good energy when they listen to my music. If someone chooses to dedicate one of my songs to a special person, that tells me I’m doing a good job. I want people to connect with me through the music, more than through the artist image or anything superficial they see on social media.
