Formula Indie Sessions – Interview In A Key

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
When I was 8 or 9ish I remember listening to Queen songs and trying to write my own versions of the lyrics which wound up just being rip offs of their lyrics.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
Around 17-18 I was introduced to a buddy (Jesse Burkett) who expanded my playing and I began to write in partnership with him.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
I partially wrote some of it while living in Seattle and have continued writing it while in Oregon. It’s been interrupted a bit due to life. I think it’s just about my thoughts and feelings about living in an increasingly absurd existence.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Electric guitar layered over acoustic pieces with vocals that attempt to match the writing.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Different finger picking techniques and learning to style my own voice.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
My Epiphone Hummingbird and Les Paul. Also Avid Pro Tools for mapping out different pieces before going into the studio.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
My buddy’s track RISE n SHINE by [manamongmen]. Also been feeling Vices by Tomorrows Bad Seeds, All In Stride by Bumpin Uglies, and Tears to Laughter by Lowkey.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
My personal experiences shape everything I write.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I hope they feel where the lyrics and music are coming from and know that they’re not alone.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
That I’m not alone.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Portland’s Folk Festival
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
So many. All of them. David Gilmour and Jimmy Page come to mind. Long live music. Fuck AI.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
To create music that I love and hopefully other people will love it as well.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
That I put the work in. I hope they enjoy.
