Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with SULABU

SULABU is pronounced as follows: Su La Bu. It is essential to give the right emphasis to each of the syllables, with particular attention to the final “Bu”.
SULABU is the new musical project by Cristiano Alberici, known for his experiences with X Mary, Hofame, Cristio, Stupid Family and Gigiabooking. This new chapter stems from the desire to evolve, to experiment with new sounds and to change once again, without ever looking back.
The Kohiba Cariba album was created and produced together with his long-time friend, Luca Fusari, and is composed of 8 unreleased tracks. The sound of the record is a mix of musical genres, with the intention of making the listener dance and get involved.
There are three singles/videos that anticipate the release of the album:
PRENDO IL TRENO: A track that immediately immerses the listener in the world of SULABU, with an irresistible rhythm. It tells the story of a hypothetical traveler who never reaches his destination, preferring to continue traveling without a final destination. An explosive mix of funk, rock and psychedelia that wins you over from the first listen.
VIDEO: Once again, dance is the protagonist on stage in the video. Syncopated movements and a body that cannot remain still. Everything is immersed in a provincial setting, which recalls the atmosphere of an urban town.
PORTOFINO: A dreamy song that excites on first listen. A dive into the past that is incredibly current and immediate. Italian pop with melancholic nuances. Within it, we find the beauty of Portofino and the stories that belong to each of us.
VIDEO: Two friends wander along the eastern Ligurian coast, looking for a new stimulus not to return home. The night seems to never end, before the innocence of those who look at life with the eyes of an eternal child.
I RAGAZZI DEL 2020: Most likely the album’s symbolic song, which mixes echoes of Franco Battiato and Gigi D’Agostino, in the intent of those who created music and words. 4 minutes and 30 seconds of musical tension. “A song structured in two sections: the first more traditional, the second an unpredictable journey into the 90s disco sound.
“i ragazzi del 2020 fanno musica sulle porte della notte senza età”
VIDEO: A farce or a comedy? The “ragazzi del 2020” are a diverse group of elderly men and women, participating in a rhythmic gymnastics course. Youth, in a country in the midst of a demographic crisis, shines in the eyes of the protagonists, in an explosion of vitality. A huge blunder
The other songs that make up Kohiba Cariba are: Uno come me, Odore di Buono, L’anima sua è nata qui, L’ascensore and L’ingorgo.
Cristiano Alberici has been in music for some time, with an approach that never stops renewing itself. His starting idea is to “unlearn” everything that is known, facing each new project as if it were the first ever, with the continuous desire to start from scratch.
During his musical career, Cristiano has held various roles: he was the singer of X MARY, the creator of the HOFAME project, the bassist and singer of the band CRISTIO, and the frontman of STUPID FAMILY.
Today, SULABU represents the new face of Cristiano Alberici, a project that summarizes his continuous musical and creative evolution.
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
My passion for music began very early, as a child. I was fascinated by the songs on the radio wherever I was.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I started making songs early, as a teenager. I didn’t like playing other artists’ songs, I still prefer making my own music.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
I had ideas in mind for years and felt the need to change my musical direction. I had a few intense years of music behind me with the Hofame project (indie pop/rock) 4 records and years of non-stop touring . I felt the need to change.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
SULABU’s music is a mix of funk, dance, pop, rock, and electro. I’ve mixed all the musical genres I’ve always loved.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
For me, it’s important to follow my ideas and instincts. Don’t have too high expectations; it’s always a privilege to be able to pursue your passions. It’s not a given.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
I use different tools and programs, and above all I collaborate with different producers, to have a more varied vision
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I recently discovered Anthony Naples’s music. It’s truly very interesting and refreshing. A friend in Bologna recommended it to me during a break after a recording session.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
My music is born from my life. Every experience, even the minor ones, ends up in the records I make. The records are personal pages of my life.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
With my music I would like to encourage people to be authentic and true, without having to necessarily follow the models that modern culture often imposes on them.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Music has kept me going, even during the most difficult times. It’s a constant guide. My passion.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
I would like to play at these two festivals: Primavera Sound, Sziget Festival
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
My dream would be to collaborate with Daft Punk, I think they were the most interesting musical project of the last few years.
