Formula Indie Sessions – Interview with Arturo Gabriel

My name is Arturo and I am a composer, producer and songwriter, currently working on three different projects. One is making music for videogames, animation and other types of OSTs. The second one is having a very small indie label called Volpinos Records. And the third one is my own personal project as a musical artist where I explore new sounds.
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
My earliest memory I think would be videogame music, because my parents and my older brother were into videogames so when I was born I was practically born with a controller in mi hand. After that I think playing around with my dad’s keyboard.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
Well the main thing that drove me to making music was simply trying to say stuff I couldn’t really say with words and trying to replicate the musical language from my favourite artists.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
In short I wanted three projects that worked towards a single goal, just make more music
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Easy to enjoy experimental rock/electronica
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Learning how to mix and master, so the whole producing side of things. It gave me an entirely new perspective on music, not to far from Neo seeing the Matrix code for the first time haha.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
I think ableton and good headphones, the rest might change depending on what I need, guitar, bass, piano, VSTs, my own voice, samples etc.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Purple Dream Emi Aramaki
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
The first thing that comes to mind with this question is my shift from pursuing the traditional rock band dream with my former band Volpinos, and then being a bit dissapointed by a lot of things, including the music scene in Venezuela which often puts the social aspect first instead of the music. That is actually one of the reasons that led me to become a producer and just have complete fun and freedom over my work. Also haveing an indie label that actually focuses on the music with artists that find it very difficult to blossom in this environment.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
It’s open to interpretation, I think while my inspirations and emotions may be very personal, my writing isn’t, so it’s very open ended. I think I mostly want people to feel badass, sometimes melancholic and have a moment of peace from the stress of the routine.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
You have to finish what you’ve started, it’s easy to have fun and make music, but it’s hard to reach the finish line when things get tough.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Probably Mad Cool in Madrid, mostly because I had a life changing experience watching some of my favourite bands live for the first time, and it would be fun to make it there
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Joshua Homme from Queens of the Stone Age would be an easy pick
Where can our listeners follow and support your music? (Website,Spotify, IG, links)
Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
To meet new people through music and be able to share more of my work with whoever might enjoy it!
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
As long as they discover my music, whether it’s through a friend, a videogame or a gig, and find something in it that ressonates witht them then that is all I am happy
