Formula Indie Sessions : Interview with Sadie Fine

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
My earliest memory is probably me singing in my kindergarten talent show. I sang Hey Ho by the lumineers at the school I attended on a military base in Germany. I was so nervous beforehand, but as soon as I started singing, all my nerves went away.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I started singing around the same time I started talking, yet I never took an interest in songwriting until I was around 13. I grew up in a military family that moved every 2-3 years, we had recently just moved from South Dakota to Tennessee. I always made friends pretty quickly each time we moved, but this time around it took me over a year to make a single friend, I began getting bullied at school and felt completely alone. In a time when I was at my lowest I picked up a ukulele for the first time and wrote my first song “popular”. I soon after started performing at open mic nights and broadway in Nashville. I only kept going from there.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
I was in a meeting with some industry people and they asked me if I wanted to be a writer or an artist. I then said I want to be both, because I love both. They responded telling me “ a woman can’t be more than one thing, you have to pick one’. My brain began to race, asking why a man can do it, but I can’t? It then created the concept for my upcoming album “The Duality of Girlhood”. Which discusses the double standards women are given in the industry and in life.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
I would say I am very synth pop, bringing 80’s pop into a modern light. I have been compared to Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter, but I think my project original and different from both. Even though that is a huge compliment.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
I learned that music has no rules. Many people try to give songwriting a structure that you must follow. When in reality, the people making it right now have no bounds. They are unapologetically themselves.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
In order to write a song all I need is either my piano or my Guitar and a quiet space, but my creative process changes per song.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Right now I really love Burnette by Cierra the Rapper. She is a mix of country twang with great rap melodies. It is different for sure.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
My personal experiences quite literally are why my music is the way it is. My songs directly reflect what is happening in my life. No song is a “fake emotion”. I like to call my songs my “not so private diary”.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I hope my listeners can see themselves in my songs. I write very honestly about heartbreak, struggling with mental health and body image, and so much more. I hope I can say what other people are too afraid to say for themselves.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Music has given me a very good work ethic and has taught me to have very thick skin. If you believe in yourself, somebody else’s no will make you work 10 times harder for the next person’s yes.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
My dream show to play is probably lolapalooza or as a more attainable near future goal hopefully BBC Introducing!
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
I would love to collaborate with Russ, he is one of my favorite artists who has one of the most insane work ethics in the industry. I have so much respect for his music and him.
Where can our listeners follow and support your music? (Website,Spotify, IG, links)

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
My dream is to become a touring artist and writer. I would love to be able to sing my music around the world as well as hear other artists sing songs I helped write.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
I hope listeners not only discover and like my music, but they see my heart. I want people to be able to see my passion and love for music as well as my work to spread love and passion to try and make our world a better place. I want to leave a legacy beyond just my music.
