Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Estrada

estrada (3)

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

Something that definitely marked me was hearing Close to Me. My brother brought home a cassette tape with songs by The Cure that changed things forever.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

From a very young age. I composed my first song for a lovely girl in my class; it was ska/reggae, and I wrote it when I was in primary school. I was obsessed with her, but unfortunately she never heard of it.

What’s the story behind your current music project?

The uncontrollable idea of changing this world for better. I was in a pub in Dublin talking with my wife and then suddenly the whole plan came to my mind (Wife is still saying that was her idea but I remember very well despite the number of pints we drank). To reflect my daily experience as a doctor in The UK and share it through music.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

My sound is primarily based on synthpop. However, you can also identify genres like alternative rock, alt-pop, dark wave, and electronica in my songs. I can’t hide my influences from Bowie, T Rex, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Placebo, Suede, New Order, Radiohead and The Cure, but also from very alternative bands like Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine.

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

When the first synthesizer arrived at home, I played guitars, bass, and acoustic drums, but an infinite world of possibilities opened up to me when a couple of things arrived: a 1981 Mono/Poly analog synthesizer and a 1987 TR626 drum machine. Since then, my perception of music has completely changed.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

My acoustic guitars (PRS Angelus, Fender Paramount), my electric guitars (Fender Jazzmaster 1965, Fender Stratocaster Standard), my versatile Korg Micro-X synthesizer, the Roland GAIA, the Mono/Poly, and the SynthMaster software, which I love. My Yamaha BB604 bass and the drum machines family: Roland D2, T8, and TR626. They are essential.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

Many. But right now I’m attached to an English band called Sleaford Mods

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

I don’t know, it’s just there. Sometimes it’s just a dream I wake up from and grab my phone to record a melody with my voice. I might be upset or excited about something at the hospital, and as soon as I get home, I start improvising a riff on the bass, piano, or guitar, and the rest just flows. And the artistic vision is the same. From the first moment I create a song, I imagine in my mind the video, the images, and everything related to the specific melody I’ve created.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

I write and compose music from the heart. I’m inspired by everyday situations with patients, colleagues, family, and God. It’s something very spiritual. Love moves everything for good in this world, and I’ve never before composed songs as sincere as I do now. For me, it’s a way to vent and, at the same time, to encourage people to do what they need to do with compassion and love.

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

Music is the perfect way to reveal your deepest and most hidden feelings of love. Your heart is a lock that can be opened with the perfect key which could be a specific song

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

I will be happy if I can play in “King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut” here in Glasgow. Check it on the internet and you’ll see why

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

I think of Elvis. He had a unique voice and was a true rock star. I would love to do vocal harmonies or just be part of his choir.

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
