Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with The King’s Mountain

Since moving to Norway from Bristol (UK) I write, record and release music under the name The King’s Mountain.
My songs are inspired by the joy, beauty and frustrations found in everyday working and family life.
I have also written five albums of songs for The Weary Band, a psychedelic folk-rock band based in Bristol. (“Beautiful”, Joe Boyd) (“Genius!”, Andy Partridge).
My songs have been used in tv shows, adverts and have received national radio play (“Amazing!” Lauren Laverne BBC6 Music).
I have recently started a new band here in Norway with the intention of recording a louder, more rocking album to be released in 2026.
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
A very elderly neighbour playing me ‘Daisy, Daisy’ on his gramophone when I was 3 or 4 years old.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I began writing weird instrumental music on keyboards and recording it on 4-track tape.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
I always have lots of projects happening at the same time. Right now I am working on an EP of 3 songs inspired by my daughter, a collaboration album with an old friend and an album of more upbeat alternative rock songs with my new band.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
This is always a difficult question because I write in lots of styles. I would say alternative folk rock with a touch of psychedelica! Kind of like Simon and Garfunkel meets Pavement.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
How to write lyrics.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
Time in which to create and my guitar. I record using Reaper and although I mixed my last album, it is not my strongest skill and I would much rather spend that time creating new songs.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Cass McCombs – everything he does!
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
Completely; I almost only write songs about things I have experienced.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
That everyday working and family life is meaningful, challenging, frustrating, joyful and rewarding enough and we don’t need to dream of being famous.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
To keep creating for yourself because it is joyful and you love it, not because it might lead you somewhere.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Glastonbury
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Paul Simon
Where can our listeners follow and support your music? (Website,Spotify, IG, links)
…and all digital platforms.
Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
To earn enough money from sync placements that I can work part time and therefore have more time to record the many songs that I have written.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
That I also wrote and sang and recorded with The Weary Band from Bristol, UK. Five albums are available digitally everywhere.
