Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Kimberly Lourainne

Kimberly Lourainne

Kimberly Lourainne is more than a voice — she’s an experience. A fierce blend of raw emotion and unapologetic glamour, Kimberly brings the drama of the drag stage into the world of pop music. Her sound is a shimmering collision of Y2K synths, moody club beats, and vulnerable storytelling, creating songs that feel like diary entries dressed in rhinestones. From heartbreak ballads to glitter-soaked anthems, Kimberly’s music is both intimate and explosive — a mirrorball that reflects every shade of desire, pain, and joy. Offstage, she is Brent, an artist and dreamer who pours his life into every lyric; onstage, Kimberly is a dazzling alter ego, commanding lights, hearts, and dance floors. With singles like Please Don’t Do Coke in the Bathroom, Kimberly Lourainne is carving out a space where queerness, vulnerability, and high-glam spectacle collide. She isn’t just performing — she’s surviving, thriving, and telling her truth in every note.

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

I always use to sing around the house, but was always shy about actually getting in-front of people to sing, but I saw Britney Spears and how confident she was in her skin and her passion for music was just mind blowing to me and I thought I want to do that too.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

I’ve always loved writing songs, from silly little songs to when I was younger with my friends to things I’ve been through personally. When I write it’s kind of like a therapy and when I get like an overwhelming emotion I like to write down a chorus or a verse that just kind of sticks out to me.

What’s the story behind your current music project?

I’m currently working on an album called “Notes of You” and its kind of like a love letter to myself, and some of the stuff I’ve been through, and it’s also kind of a love letter to my husband. I have a song on there called “Scent” that I wrote just based off of his cologne smells.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

I’m like a mix of hyperpop, indie ballads and emotional lyrics that hopefully you will connect with.

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

To stop comparing myself to other artist and how they sound vs thinking my stuff won’t sound good and no one will like it.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

I love using BandLab, it’s very user friendly

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

I really like Conan Gray

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

I grew up gay in a very religious town, it was very hard so I hid myself for most of my life, I take those experiences and a lot of the stuff I’ve been through and turn them into something other people can hopefully relate to. I want to hopefully help someone going through stuff like, discovering who you are or addiction and show them that there is another way and it does eventually get better

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

That life is joyous, it is hard but beautiful. There will be struggles and things might get hard but music will free you. It is the one thing in this world that translates across languages. I hope they feel the emotion and the passion I’ve put into my music. From sad songs to dance pop songs!

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

To just live in the moment, and don’t take anything for granted. Also it has taught me that you are not the only one going through something.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

I’d love to play at one of the music awards or Coachella would be awesome too!

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

My dream would be to collaborate with Kesha. She is an artist who has overcome, and persevered through pretty much the music industry trying to take her voice. She did not let that stop her and she continues to make music and it is truly inspiring!

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?

I’d love to just grow my audience and have people all around the world singing my songs with me! To hear my song on the radio would be awesome too.

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

I hope they discover that it’s okay to just be yourself, always be authentically you and if people don’t like it or disagree with it, it will be okay. Because there are people out there who will get you.
