MUSIC FOR YOUR EARS | REVIEW No Slowing Down By The Hidden Factor
After a hiatus of over three decades, The Hidden Factor has made a triumphant
return with their new EP, No Slowing Down. This five-track collection distills the
essence of their classic 60s-influenced power pop sound while integrating more mature
and sophisticated elements reflective of their musical journey. The original members,
Jason Mills, Jeff Wollard, Jim Miele, and Rob Gallas, have reunited to deliver an EP
that resonates with both nostalgia and contemporary relevance. Produced by Mills, the
EP shows a refined quality that surpasses their 80s material.
The title track, No Slowing Down, is a beacon of optimism and resilience,
inspired by Mills’ and Wollard’s personal health struggles. This song sets the tone for
the EP with its powerful drumbeat and infectious guitar riff. The lyrics, especially the
line ‘only one thing gonna slow you down / if your heart says you’ll never get any
better,’ encapsulate the spirit of perseverance. The song is an energetic opener that
harks back to the band’s glory days while also embracing their growth. Mills’
production shines here, delivering a polished yet vibrant sound that stands out as an
anthem for anyone refusing to let life’s challenges hinder their passion.
Brother is a heartfelt ode to the bonds formed beyond blood relationships.
Written by Jeff Wollard, this track was pivotal in reigniting the band’s reunion. Initially
recorded during Mills’ cancer treatment, Brother carries an emotional weight that is
beautifully conveyed through its acoustic arrangement. The lyrics ‘though it may be true
we come from different mothers / you still are my brother’ highlight the theme of
solidarity and support. The harmonies and dual-guitar solos add depth to the song,
making it a poignant reminder of the strength found in chosen family.
Hole In My Heart, penned by Jim Miele, brings a touch of nostalgia with its
jangle pop influences reminiscent of Nick Lowe, The Knack, and XTC. This track is
characterised by its catchy melody and intense bridge. Despite its upbeat tempo, the
song delves into themes of loss and the inevitability of heartache. Miele’s lyrics explore
the idea that some losses leave a permanent void, a ‘hole in your heart’ that can never be
completely filled. The song’s layered instrumentation and emotional crescendos make it
a standout track on the EP, blending introspective lyrics with an infectious pop
sensibility.
Rob Gallas’ contribution, Something In Her Way, is a vibrant exploration of love
and attraction. This song embodies the band’s signature upbeat pop style while
incorporating a syncopated rhythm and hints of reggae. The lyrics, inspired by Gallas’
experience of meeting his wife, paint a vivid picture of the euphoric feeling of falling in
love. With lines like ‘float through the stars, landed on Mars,’ the song projects a
whimsical charm. The detailed layered vocals and playful lyrics make this track a
delightful listen, celebrating the joy of new beginnings without the shadow of past
hardships.
Closing the EP is She’s A River, a haunting and beautiful ballad that diverges
from the overall upbeat mood. This track tells the story of a man’s futile attempt to
control the uncontrollable, symbolised by the metaphor of a river. Mill’ slide guitar,
Gallas’ emotive vocals, Miele’s moody guitar solo, and the addition of strings create a
rich, atmospheric soundscape. The lyrics, especially the closing line ‘I took my turn to
try to slow her down / I ain’t nothing but a fool,’ offer a poignant conclusion. Wollard’s
initial suggestion to record the song without drums was overruled, resulting in an eerie
yet compelling rhythm that enhances the song’s emotional depth.
No Slowing Down by The Hidden Factor highlights the band’s enduring talent
and evolution. Each track on the EP offers a unique blend of their classic sound with
modern influences, revealing their ability to create music that is both nostalgic and
refreshingly new. The production quality, musicianship, and heartfelt lyrics make this
EP a standout for fans old and new. The Hidden Factor has not only reunited but has
also proven that their passion for music remains undiminished. With their powerful
performances and engaging melodies, they have delivered an EP that is both a
celebration of their past and a bold declaration for the future.
