Formula Indie Sessions – Interview with J-N.Dubbs
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
My earliest memory connected to music was elementary school. I played alto saxophone in the school band/jazz band.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
My passion for creating music began with the movie CB4. I was too young to see the movie but my cousin and I sneakily rented it from West Coast Video. After we saw that the characters in the movie went through less than we had, we realized we could be rappers.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
My current project VS2 is the sequel to my first ever solo mixtape Versatile Style Mixtape. What started as me completing an unfinished project turned into a re-awakening of my brand.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Hip Hop in its truest form. No lies some exaggeration but all in the name of good music and good messages.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
If no one you know likes what you’ve created but you do. There is someone else who will love what you created more than you ever could.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
Pen and paper have always been my go to tools. Give me space and a good beat and I can make magic happen.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Currently I am not a fan of indie artists or main stream for that matter. In a rush to capitalize off of AI, people and companies will stoop to the lowest levels of non artistry to be the shiny new toy. So I try my best to not consume any music unless it is completely man made and original.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
Growing up as a young black man in Philadelphia PA in the US. Going outside was more than enough to gain experience in the world. When your people have been labeled the enemy of the world for no better reason than being better suited. You gain a kind of armor that will protect you from the lies and miss information spread about people you know personally to be the most kind and caring people on the planet. My music is an extension of my wish to change the narrative about my people.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
Everyone everywhere no matter race color or creed has good and bad people intertwined. But once we join despite our differences and learn from each other. We can dance, laugh, sing, and grow as a species.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Anyone can create beautiful music with good inspiration.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
I would love to play at the Apollo and or Power House in my hometown Philly.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
I would love to collaborate with Stevie Wonder because he is my favorite artist of all time.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
My dream for the next chapter in my musical journey would be to grow my company 215Franchise. I want to sign new and old artist and start an underground collective of performers and fans.
