Formula Indie Sessions – Interview with Onarian

Introduction of the project

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

My earliest memory linked to music is a tie between watching Saint Seiya which featured the song “Pegasus Fantasy” by the band called Make-Up and Dragon Ball Z with the song “Cha-La Head-Cha-La” by the musician whose name is Hironobu Kageyama.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

I fell in love with music around nine years old when I started intentionally listening to it on CD. Discovering artists like Beyonce, Britney Spears and Shakira who all have songs that I couldn’t stop replaying sparked the fire that lit the way to my need of making my own music.

What’s the story behind your current music project?

My album “Assigned Affection” consists of lyrics written then recorded by myself in my room and the composition of 6 out of the 10 songs was also achieved that way.

While writing I felt deeply inspired by the concept of self-preservation when being affected by emotional connections.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

I would tell them that if they are into electro-leaning pop beats, vocals filled with R&B warmth and lyrics about resilience then my sound is made for them.

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

While I was beginning to familiarize myself with the ups and downs of being a musician I discovered that even if somebody make their hatred of my music known every day, it didn’t matter because I enjoy the process of making the music more than the reviews linked to it and this fact became like a shield allowing me to share my work without worrying excessively.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

I am used to writing my lyrics on the Keep Notes app by Google while simultaneously using the recording app on my phone to create demos of melodies, then I like to use Logic Pro to compose and record my singing.

Recently I’ve been dabbling into using A.I. tools to help with fast tracking parts of this process which can sometimes be taxing physically and mentally when preparing albums by myself.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

The song called “Beaucoup” by the artist called Bilal Hassani.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

The main thing affecting my process of creation on a daily basis is schizophrenia, which drains most of my thinking time and forces me to recenter my focus throughout the day.

The surge of A.I. also made me discover that my art doesn’t need to be perfect because when A.I. is putting fully produced songs at everyone’s fingertips I think that as a human artist the imperfections in my songs are what make a difference. Making sure that I enjoy the time spent on my artistry is also at the top of my priorities.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

The sentence “you can achieve hard things” is a good representation of my work.

 What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

Music taught me that happiness hides in the most unexpected places.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

It would feel divine if one day I manage to sell out the Letzigrund Stadium in Switzerland because it is the one where I bought tickets with my own money for the first time to see the Ms Carter Show by my favorite artist Beyoncé so performing in the same stadium as her would be a career milestone.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

My dream collaboration would be with Beyoncé because she has no bad songs and I find her voice to be unrivaled in terms of capturing my attention and radically changing my mood for the better.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?

I have already realised my dream by putting myself in a position which allows me to create music despite schizophrenia so a nice addition to it would be being able to make a living from it.

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

I hope they will discover everything I have to offer as an entertainer and notice the message in my music telling them I am proof that they won’t break even when life beats their self-esteem up.
