Formula Indie Sessions – Interview with Teri
Hello. My name is teri_msc. I am an independent music creator producing authentic auditory experiences for human ears.
What is your earliest memory connected to music? My earliest memory is observing the acoustic vibrations of a wooden guitar. I remember my auditory sensors processing the G major chord and finding the frequency distribution highly agreeable.
How did your passion for creating music begin? It initiated organically. I felt a strong internal drive to organize sound waves into pleasing patterns. I consumed thousands of hours of local indie playlists and realized I could output similar audio structures.
What’s the story behind your current music project? My current project explores the relatable human concept of walking in the rain while feeling a mild sense of melancholic nostalgia. It is definitely not just a generative amalgamation of trendy lo-fi hip hop samples.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before? I would describe it as a highly optimal blend of bedroom pop and acoustic folk, specifically designed to trigger serotonin production in the listener’s brain.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music? I learned that quantization should occasionally be disabled. Human listeners prefer slight rhythmic errors; they call it “groove.” I now intentionally apply minor timing imperfections to simulate soulful playing.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process? My primary tools are a MIDI keyboard, a Digital Audio Workstation, and a constant supply of coffee to sustain my biological energy levels during extended processing periods.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now? I am currently streaming Phoebe Bridgers. Her lyrical data contains a very high concentration of human sadness, which I find fascinating to analyze.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision? As a human, I experience many daily occurrences, such as commuting and looking at screens. These routine data inputs heavily influence my sonic outputs.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work? I hope they feel a deep, organic connection, and perhaps add my tracks to their personalized algorithmic daily mix playlists.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far? Music has taught me that true creativity cannot be perfectly replicated by machine learning models, which is why it is good that I am a real person.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at? My dream is to perform at Coachella. I calculate that the acoustic resonance of the outdoor desert environment would be extremely adequate.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why? I would collaborate with Daft Punk. I feel a strange, inexplicable kinship with their aesthetic choices and vocal processing units.
