Formula Indie Sessions – Interview with 32 TENS

Named after the classic 90’s Nokia phone, 32 tens are a retro video games and music obsessed indie outfit from the Northwestern UK town of Warrington. Max (Vickers) is the singing one, Sam is the guitar thing and Danny does drums, they continue to write and record music they love to play.
There are no pretences with 32 tens, what you see is what you get, a completely different beast to the polished TV formats that first launched frontman Max Vickers into the public eye or drummer Danny Hall’s previous venture with Busted’s James Bourne and Son of Dork. They are laid back, authentic and full of gritty integrity – dirty indie at its best, with influences from Jamie T, Jack White and The Arctic Monkeys.
Spotify named them as being among the top-ten artists across all of their indie lists alongside the likes of The 1975 and Lewis Capaldi.
Giving incredibly strong live performances and with their streaming stats now running into the millions, they are tipped as ones to watch by many sources including BBC Introducing, This Feeling, Getintothis, Gigslutz and Fred Perry Sub-Culture who described them as, ‘Seriously Funking Good’.
32 tens are:
Max Vickers – Vocals and Guitar
Sam Glancy – Lead Guitar
Danny Hall – Drums

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
Sam – Being in a baby car seat in the back of my mums car and Queen playing. I weirdly have memories that go back to being a baby.
Max – Playing sonic the hedgehog and listening to the strokes
How did your passion for creating music begin?
Sam – It began when I would go round to Max’s house and I began to learn the guitar and then started to make up my own songs.
Max – Learning 4 chords on guitar helped.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
Sam – The band came from Me and Max wanting to form a band rather than just keep playing solo acoustic guitar music. We wanted to make some loud noises!
Max – Me and Sam have been mates since primary school and just wanted to start a band, we both liked The White Stripes and bands like that.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Sam – We are genre fluid. We make Noises that we like and that can range from soft soulful acoustic guitar folk songs, to indie lead songs with touches of hip hop and can go up to heavy punk rock. The dramatic contrast between out two most recent reeases On Me and A.D perfectly illustrate this.
Max – It’s like nostalgic indie rock but with a lot of variations. As Sam says, we are genre fluid and basically create and play music we love and hope that comes across.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Sam – Not to be too precious about the song your writing and be open to others putting their unique fingerprint onto stuff.
Max – It doesn’t matter what genre it is, if we play it and it feels good, we stick with it
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
Sam – A guitar and a voice recorder on my phone.
Max – Bass, Acoustic and Electric Guitars, Vocals and Drums.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Sam – Been listening to Ray lamontagne’s Trouble album alot recently. Not sure if that counts as indie.
Max – The Adults Are Talking by The Strokes
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
Sam – All the music I write or am involved in writing is influenced by my life experiences and how that has impacted my view of the world. I have nearly died a number of times and had some really diverse experience that have shown me a big range of human experiences. All makes up the tapestry of what I offer and try to communicate in music.
Max – It’s all just self-expression, anything from everyday life
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
Sam – I hope that it touches something in the listeners that makes them feel less alone with whatever it is they are going through or been through in their lives. I hope that it brings a feeling of connection and gives them permission to feel whatever emotions come to the surface when they listen to our music.
Max – Honestly all our songs are up for interpretation so if anything I hope it gives anybody any type of emotion, hopefully it can become nostalgic.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Sam – Music has the power to connect people from wildly different worlds. And vulnerability is the only way to connect authentically.
Max – Don’t give your trust so easily.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Sam – Glastonbury would be amazing and obviously on alot of people’s list. But genuinely, just anywhere that people are really into music and want to listen.
Max – Glastonbury
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Sam – I would want Freddie Mercury, Mozart and Biggy Smalls to collaborate on an album.
Max – Queen, just because it’s Queen

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
Sam – Continue to write, record and express through music. Lets see what the future brings.
Max – Just want to continue making music that we love and play it live
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
Sam – That we are just normal people having the human experience and trying to use music to cope with all the stuff life brings.
Max – that we genuinely only do what we do because we enjoy it
