Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Stun

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
During my up bringing, i’ve always been immersed in my tradtional culture, whether it was powwow dancing as a grass dancer or singing on the traditional drum with a group of my relatives. It has always been around, even through my uncles playing guitar during christmas gatherings or whatever it may be, even break dancing. I use to break dance heavily because of my older cousins. But that’s always been around and I take it with me everywhere I perform.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I like to think it began as a outlet for expression. I messed around with cameras and we use to make videos of ghost/horror stories and even imitated the famous “Jackass” movie. Throughout that time, i wanted to re create a “music video” where i was lip singing a swollen members song. And I think that was the spark that created the need to create my own stuff.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
At the moment, the song i was writing was more of an experience thing. Because these last few years it felt like I can really only count on my self. From bringing in my motivation to getting help with certain things. I found that at the end of the day, it’s really me who’s doing the work. The loving, the movement, the environment i’ve created. Etc. and so with that, it inspired me to write something I can share with my children. That they can do whatever they want in life, with little to no help. It is very possible.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Sharp and sincere lyrics with stories of struggle and heartache that melt into messages of hope, endurance, and love—all existing within an electric soundscape of invigorating tempos, striking beats, and compassionate vocals.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
I found that over the years, the one thing i’ve learned is that you must be able to feel those emotions. Without them, I cannot sit there and write a song. I need to hear myself and listen to whats really going on. It has taught me to be true to myself and others. Rather than putting out nonesense that’s always accessible.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
I use fruity loops for my instrumentals. I create all of my beats unless a grant is presented and i’ll be able to reach out to collaborators. Which in turn, allows me to create more cool stuff. I record with Studio One DAW and use a Spark SL mic for vocals.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I’ve been really diggin’ Oliver Tree lately.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
There was a ton of growth over the years. When it was introduced to me, i was doing the stupid teenager thing and taking advantage of my youthful lifestyle. I was involved with gangs, drugs and addictions while attempting to pursue the dream. It had its ups and downs where I was able to access certain inspirations, but it gets old pretty quick. I started a family and having children and building myself up. Potentially becoming who I am atm. To take things seriously and not let opportunities slip away.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I put alot of my self into the music. From sadness to happiness to pride etc. i just hope they feel the same way without feeling left out. I try to write with inclusion. Because for me, being included means people give a shit.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
It has taught me patience. And building with patience is always better than rushing the process. You can tell when its rushed. It doesnt feel as honest.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Rock the bells or house of blues, just because all the greats have used their talents there. I’d feel like I made it if that was the case.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
I would really love to collaborate with Nas. He’s been such an inspiration in my music journey. I stumbled across his music in my teenage years and have been hooked ever since. My reason is simple. It would add to my bucket list of things I wanna do and it would mean the world to me.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
I am slowly working toward an album. I plan on collaborating with artist’s i’ve never worked with before. “Genre wise”. But for now, we take it as it comes.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
