What is your earliest memory connected to music?

As a band, Juvel started out busking in Winnipeg as a trio, and later expanded to a  quartet.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

Juvel began when we all realized that we shared a love for swing music from the 1930s  and ’40s

What’s the story behind your current music project?

Juvel is a Winnipeg, Canada-based swing quartet that began in 2015 as a jazz  manouche quartet, later evolving to include vocal harmonies and original arrangements  of jazz standards.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music  before?

We like to say that we are a blend of the rhythm and instrumentation of Le Quintette du  Hot Club de France, and the vocal harmonies of the Andrews Sisters.

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music? We constantly strive to deepen our knowledge of the history of jazz manouche and

swing to create an authentic, yet original sound.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process? We like to keep things simple. The band is made up of violin, two acoustic guitars, and

upright bass. All four band members sing, too!

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

We are loving what Jonathan Stout is doing for swing music!

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision? All four women in Juvel have had varying levels of formal education in jazz music.

Meeting other local musicians who play swing and jazz manouche has been a huge  influence pushing us to embrace the tradition!

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work? We want to make our listeners laugh, make them feel good, and we want to get them

dancing!

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

Music has taught us the importance of community!

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

The jazz manouche festivals in France are definitely on the bucket list!

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why? Of course collaborating with our influences, Django Reinhard, Stephane Grappelli would

be a dream!

Where can our listeners follow and support your music? (Website,Spotify, IG, links) You can find our music on bandcamp!

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical  journey?

Right now, we are in the early stages of planning a tour around Canada!

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way? We just hope our listeners will leave our concerts feeling uplifted!
