Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Irvin Miller

Introduction of the project
At just 22 years of age, Irvin Miller is quickly gaining recognition as one of Manitoba’s most exciting young performers. Elevating the room with his blend of traditional country, funk, blues, gospel and old-school R&B, he conjures a songwriting ability seldom found in artists of his age group. Pairing that with his soulful voice and relaxed charisma, Irvin Miller is cementing himself as one of the finest rising stars that Western Canada has to offer.
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
Singing in the church. Gospel music moves me in a way nothing else can, I’m very proud to have my roots there.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
Finding the deep and diverse catalogue of Motown Records. I had always been a studious listener of old-school music, however once I felt the passion of Ain’t Too Proud to Beg – The Temptations and synonymous records, I was bit by the bug!
What’s the story behind your current music project?
My debut single I’m Drunk Again is my attempt to truly fuse all the styles that I find inspiring to me. Blues, Country, Funk, and R&B. It’s a nod to outlaw country as well as it is Stax-infused soul. The lyrics don’t take themselves too seriously, and the band puts on a high-energy performance that jumps off the record. I’m real happy with how it turned out!
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Old-school is cool again! Irvin Miller Band is something for both the kids and their grandmothers.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music? Singing something with feeling is infinitely more powerful than singing it perfectly.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process? My guitar! I can’t be creative without something to strum on.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
James Otto – Overthinkin’ !
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
When I sing the words I sing, I mean it. I’ve been down in ways that would make the reaper shutter. I want people to know that when I’m singing the blues, I mean what’s coming out of my mouth.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work? It’s ok to not take yourself too seriously. Just get down on it and think later!
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
If you’re doing it for the money, you’re doing it wrong!
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
I’m grateful for every show, big or small. That being said, Antone’s in Austin, TX stands out for sure. As well as The Ryman in Nashville, Red Rocks in Colorado, as well as numerous festivals across Europe!
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why? Mahalia Jackson.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
I am lucky to say I just signed my first record deal with Skysong Records. Beginning the process of recording my debut full-length album has been surreal, and I’m incredibly excited for the people to get a full taste of what we’re cooking up!
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
I’m just a regular guy! If you see me in a crowd, please come say hello!
