Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Ty P

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

I actually didn’t have much to do with music for a very long time. I was a child who didn’t really listen to much music; the only time I sang was in the shower, happily humming songs I’d made up myself. That might well be why my parents signed me up for the school choir, where I met one of my best friends.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

The friend I met back then in the school choir started making music years later (I think I was 15 at the time). That inspired me to write lyrics too, and before long we were recording our first songs together. That’s also where my name, Ty P, comes from. My mate gave it to me because, at the start, I was churning out lyrics like a typewriter on an assembly line.

What’s the story behind your current music project?

I’m currently working on my first album. It was actually supposed to come out last summer, but I had to keep putting it off due to mental health issues, as I’d taken on far too much. Hopefully, though, it’ll be released this summer. It’s called *musigdichter mixtape* and is a mishmash of songs I’ve written over the last few years.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

I hate that question because I never quite know how to answer it, but usually I just say: ‘I make rap in different styles – fancy having a listen?’ Personally, though, I’d never call myself a rapper, which is why I’ve come up with my own term for my music: I’m the *musigdichter* (music poet).

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

I can’t pinpoint a single thing. I’d say it’s all a process; you’re constantly learning and then putting what you’ve learnt into practice. With every song you make, your musical presence grows.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

My process for making music is as follows: Search for a beat on YouTube. Write the lyrics on my mobile while listening to the beat. Use Ytmp3 to download the YouTube beat. Use Tunebeats to work out the BPM and key of the song. Import the beat into Ableton Live 12. Switch on the Volt 276 interface and record using the Neumann mic. Export the tracks and send them to my mixer for mixing and mastering. Song finished.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

One of my favourite artists is Paula Hartman.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

My music reflects who I am right now. As a result, my personal experiences have a huge influence on my music. My lyrics are my thoughts. That’s why I find it really hard to write lyrics when I’m feeling down, because then I only write sad things, which makes me even sadder. It’s also much less fun than when I’m feeling good. Most of the songs I actually like were written when I was feeling good :).

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

My main aim is to spread good cheer. I always try to write in such a way that the listener can see themselves in the first-person narrator.

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

Music can really cheer me up when it works, but on the other hand, it can really get me down when it doesn’t.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

I’d love to perform anywhere, except for far-right events or the like. But if I had to choose right now, I’d probably say the main stage at the Frauenfeld Festival.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

I think I’d go for Paula Hartman again here, because I think her lyrics are phenomenal and her vibe really grabs me. Would our music go well together? At first glance, I wouldn’t say so, but I reckon we could definitely find common ground and work some magic.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?

The next step is definitely to release and promote my album. After that, I want to focus on my website, which will serve as a database of all Swiss German music artists and help draw more attention to the Swiss German music scene. The website is called Dialektwerk and will go live as soon as possible.

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

You will get to hear the *musigdichter* at his very best.
