Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with MORTEZ

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
Brett: The earliest memory i actually remember is trying to play a Pirates of the Caribbean theme on the drums at like 4 or 5. Rachele: My mother conceived me in Japan when she was doing a show (as a professional dancer) suffice it to say music was a part of my DNA from the start.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
Brett: Ever since I was a little kid, music has just been flowing through me. I picked up the guitar for real at 14 and just never put it down. Rachele: dance competition was my my life (mom owned 3 dance studios) when I decided at 16 to take music seriously it was not welcomed. My mom wanted me to dance but I knew song writing and performing as a singer was my calling.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
Rachele: Mortez is about bringing the coven Together (Mortezians) to heal our wounds from the treacheries of life. The name Mortez is derived from Morticia & Gomez Addams. We are obsessed with theater, drama, fashion – we want people to show up in costume for our shows. A proper fashion ‘coven gathering’ to sing, dance and heal.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Brett: Cinematic theatre rock!
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Brett: How simplicity can make for something truly memorable and meaningful
Rachele: Authenticity is everything. Pulling the messages from the soul, the gut. Writing lyrics that depict the rage, beauty and pain in the healing journey are the songs that resonate the most.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
Brett: Neural dsp and keyscape!
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Rachele: Hooked Like Helen. They are brilliant.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
Rachele: Losing my mother to suicide amongst many other tragic losses in my life make the process of being an artist so painful yet so powerful. I have so much to say and heal within myself. I’m grateful Brett and I have the opportunity to pour our hearts into Mortez and the message it brings to people.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
Rachele: You are not alone. It gets better and we need you here. I want people to feel seen and also be able to escape and have a good time !
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Brett: Patience and discipline for the craft
Rachele: it’s a business and people take advantage of artists. Create a publishing company, own your masters and find a music attorney to help with contracts.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Brett: red rocks and i would love to perform milton keynes or wembley
Rachele: Lady Gaga’s largest performance was a free standalone concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, drawing a record-breaking 2.5 million fans. Putting that on the vision board.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Brett: the Rev from Avenged Sevenfold, he had a such a dark whimsical expression of his music that was just so fun and twisted from pinkly smooth to a little piece of heaven.
Rachele: Lady Gaga. The drama, the ferocity, the time she takes to put a concept/story together for a song. Not to mention the wardrobe !

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
Brett: We definitely want to start touring, getting our band out there and getting to share our message with as many people as we can.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
Brett: Your past doesn’t define you or what you can do with your life.
Rachele: You can start over and find your voice. It’s never too late to believe in yourself and follow your dreams. It’s ok to find new friends, family, community. Call in the people and things that will lift you up and heal your soul.
