Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Solo Noi

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
Saw dad and my uncles playing and singing at Irish weddings
How did your passion for creating music begin?
After Seeing The Doors play at The Roundhouse in 1967 and The Beatles on Top of The Pops
What’s the story behind your current music project?
Solo Noi began in 2016. Working with Robert S Smith and myself John Fitzsimons we set upon to explore music in a range of genres as songwriters. We tried to avoid too much repetition but settled into a jazzy pop vibe, adding more rock and reggae and blues as we went along. We have now added a guitarist and drummer ready to play live shows.
We both had success in various projects an d wanted to try something new.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Real. We play everything ourselves – the guitars at the drums the bass and keyboards are all created by us as are the vocals. It’s a sort of 70s band sound brought up to date.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
You need a producer and a manager and a sound engineer if you are going to play live. Don’t skimp on production and avoid gigs that gain nothing for you.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
Guitars, synths, drum kits, bass – we use logic pro and master everything through and a mastering company
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Yaniss Odua
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
We’ ve worked on building sites factories and in offices, played in London clubs and some major festivals, been married 3 times with 4 kids, taught a thousand kids how to play music in bands and make films, travelled to play in Ireland, France Germany Denmark Austria Spain Canada and the USA. So many people with so many stories and each one can become a song.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
Reflect on stuff and learn from it but don’t let it undermine you… move on .. life is waiting to be lived.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Take time to make the music the best it can be and learn from others.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
The Roundhouse London
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
