Formula Indie Sessions : Interview with Niki J Crawford

1-
My earliest memory connected to music had to be singing in the church choir when I was 6.
I would sing loud and proud in church hearing my mama and the pastor sayin ” Sang baby!”
2-
My family, especially my mama always had music playing. So I would hear good stuff growing up. Loved it and would start trying to just write how I felt. I would sing it, to test it, and then create. As I got older I started putting music to it etc, etc. Then became hooked snd passionate about singing and creating.

Im currently finishing my 3rd album and its interesting because my mama passed away
Feb. 21st, 2026.This year. 3months ago. Her name is Joanne!
Hardest thing I’ve ever. Undescribable pain.
And I wrote a song for her and its has caused the whole record to come together. Her song is about how hard she fought til the end cuz she has always been a fighter. That’s the story behind my current project.
4-
I would describe my sound as Soulful, Funky, Lyrics talking about real stuff, Positive, Vocals.
My sound makes you feel good. Makes you wanna dance, and know You Are Enough!
5-
Always start from your heart. Be honest. Open. Truthful. LOVE!
I learned that if you stick to those things your music will reflect that and your fans stay along for the ride.
6-
Tools I have to have is my Voice Recorder. I need that thing becsuse ideas pop out of nowhere lol
Good ol paper and pen is important too! My editing software on my ipad has been useful lately as well 😉
7-
The artist Im loving is tough because I love a few.
But Snoh Aalegra is one my top few.
Artist James Connor as well.
8-
My personal experiences influence my music and vision greatly. I usually always write, create, and sing about something Im going through, been through, or saw. It’s a huge part of who I am. Open. My experiences.

The message and emotions I want listeners yo take from my work is knowing I can relate to what they are going through. That they Are Enough like my song days. That I don’t take them for granted. I appreciate that they could listen to anything but they listen go me. Thank you.
10-
The most important lesson music has taught me is you always have a place to land. Music is there when you are hsppy, sad, hurt, hungry, confused, excited. Music will always be there. Its healing.
