Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with MYKY

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
I’ve always dreamed of becoming a star. As a child, I used to imitate Michael Jackson because music had this huge, magnetic power over me from the very beginning. But I was also incredibly shy, so my first “concerts” were actually private shows for my toys. One day, my grandmother secretly watched one of my performances, and when it was over, she told me I was a star. That moment stayed with me forever—it was probably the first time I truly believed music could be my path.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
My passion started with performance first—the desire to express emotions bigger than words. As I grew up, I realized that singing other people’s songs wasn’t enough anymore. I needed to tell my own story, my own struggles, dreams, and identity. Writing music became the most honest way to turn my inner world into something real, and from that moment, creating became essential.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
My current project is the evolution of everything I’ve lived so far: my Neapolitan roots, my international influences, and my journey through major stages and competitions across Europe. It’s about blending Mediterranean soul with contemporary pop, creating music that feels personal but universal. This chapter represents growth, freedom, and the courage to fully own who I am as an artist.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
I’m a concentration of music and pop culture, with a strong passion for 80s retrowave aesthetics. My sound blends Mediterranean soul with contemporary pop, creating something that feels both personal and universal. It’s a sonic world where nostalgia and modernity meet—built on emotion, cinematic energy, and melody. This chapter of my music represents growth, freedom, and the courage to fully own who I am as an artist.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
I learned that authenticity always connects more deeply than perfection. For a long time, I thought music had to fit expectations, but the biggest shift came when I understood that vulnerability and truth create the strongest art. Once I embraced that, my music became more powerful.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
My voice is always the starting point—it’s my first instrument. Beyond that, I rely a lot on piano for songwriting, and in production I use tools that help me shape emotion into sound, especially modern pop production software. But honestly, the most essential tool is the feeling behind the song.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Right now, I’m really inspired by artists who blend strong identity with innovation—people who aren’t afraid to push boundaries while staying emotionally honest. I love discovering music that feels both intimate and global.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
Every stage of my life has shaped my sound—from my early shyness to performing on major stages, from my Southern Italian identity to international experiences. My music is deeply influenced by resilience, ambition, and the constant balance between vulnerability and strength.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I want people to feel empowered, understood, and free. Whether it’s confidence, heartbreak, ambition, or self-discovery, I hope my music reminds listeners that their emotions are powerful and that being fully yourself is your greatest strength.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Music taught me that connection is everything. Technique matters, success matters—but real impact happens when people feel something genuine through you.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
My dream is the Eurovision stage. It represents everything I love about music: diversity, performance, emotion, and the power of connecting with millions of people across Europe and beyond in a single moment. It’s not just a festival for me—it’s a cultural stage where identity and artistry truly come together.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Michael Jackson, without question. He was my first inspiration, and his artistry went beyond music—he created worlds. Collaborating with him would mean merging performance, emotion, and vision at the highest level.
