Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Edu Esteve

Edu Esteve has just released “La meva sort”, the first single from what will become his new musical project. With this song, the Catalan artist begins a new creative chapter marked by a more organic sound and a clear intention to connect through emotion and closeness.
This release also holds special significance in his career: “La meva sort” is the first work released under La Fuga Records, the independent label created by the artist himself. The project was born with the aim of offering a free, honest, and sustainable space for artists while respecting their identity and creative vision. Through this initiative, Edu Esteve begins a new era of self-management and opens the door to supporting new projects within the music scene.
With an established career in the Catalan music scene, Edu Esteve has released works such as Fènix (2021), ARA O MAI (2023), and COLORS (2024), while connecting with audiences through songs like La Primavera, one of the most played songs on Catalan radio. His participation in Eufòria also helped expand his reach, consolidating him as one of the most recognizable voices in today’s music landscape.
“La meva sort” represents a turning point in his career. It is an intimate piece about shared luck — about finding someone who transforms your life and realizing that this bond is mutual. Inspired by the relationship with his dog, the song is built around an honest and universal emotional narrative.
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
My earliest memory is from when I was very young, singing songs from the movies The Lion King, Tarzan, and The Jungle Book.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
As a child, before going to school, instead of watching cartoons I would watch music videos on MTV, dreaming of becoming an artist like the ones I saw on those channels.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
Throughout all these years, I used digital tools that helped me create songs. This time, I wanted to create them organically, by myself, with a guitar or a piano, and build them in a more natural way. We live in a world where we no longer know how to distinguish what is real from what is not. With this project, I want to be as natural, organic, and transparent as possible, while conveying respect for music and especially for the people who listen to it.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
My current sound focuses on production with real instruments and raw, unfiltered vocal performances, moving away from electronic elements to give prominence to the essence of the song itself. The new album, currently in progress, will combine indie pop, singer-songwriter music, and folk.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
I’ve learned that there’s really no rush to release music. Some time ago, I saw it differently, and maybe there were songs I would have liked to revisit more in terms of production or lyrics. Over time, I’ve learned that there’s no point in rushing because you can still get anywhere by walking steadily.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
I use guitar and piano as instruments. As my DAW, I use Logic Pro X, and I also use the Splice library whenever I need a sound or a loop. Once I have the demo of the song, I bring it to a professional producer and we work on it together until it’s finished.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Lately, I’ve been listening a lot to Doors by Noah Kahan.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
They are 100% of my music. Everything I’ve composed and written comes from personal experiences. I believe music is a channel to release thoughts and experiences that each of us carries inside.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I try not to expect anything, honestly. Whenever I’ve had expectations or illusions about something, I’ve often ended up disappointed because maybe I set them too high. So, I simply hope that if people listen to my music, it helps them in their daily lives.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Music has the power to connect cultures, it carries history, and it reminds us every day who we are and where we come from. Music has taught me that an entire people can come together to help another. I had the pleasure and honor of participating in El Concert del País in Catalonia to help the Valencian people after the tragic 2024 Spanish floods disaster DANA.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
I would love to perform in the middle of the sea, on the Costa Brava, where the concert could only be accessed by kayak or paddle surf.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
I would collaborate with Phil Collins. I think he’s one of those people with real magic, not only as a musician, because he’s extraordinary, but also as a person. I get the feeling he’s even better as a human being, and that’s saying a lot.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
To be able to do a tour presenting the new album in 2027 and for it to be a complete success.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
The only thing I truly hope is that they discover themselves better, and that they connect with their land and their people.
