Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Abynormil

Hello everyone this is Abynormil Band
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
I grew up on a farm in the middle of nowhere so music was my sanity.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
My parents listen mostly to country music and R&B. When we moved to the city I was introduced to AC/DC, Van Halen, heavy rock and roll and I was hooked.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
I’ve been playing cover tunes for a long time and decided I needed to try writing my own stuff. It was really invigorating to do. I felt free.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Fun! We enjoy what we do, and I think you can tell when you listen. We do heavy rock, on to mellow party songs, with sad songs included.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Growing up in the “Hair Band” days it was all about guitar virtuoso, playing as many notes as possible. I’ve found that most people prefer simple songs. Stuff that is easy to sing and dance to so we try to go in that direction.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
I prefer guitar and keyboards, we actually use an old BOSS 12 channel recording board (from the early 90’s) so we’re authentic. Not using computer software makes it harder to get the track, but you don’t get the canned sound from using auto tune and other tricks that bands use now days.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I don’t really have a favorite, I like to listen to other bands to see how they do things. You have to keep an open mind or you get stuck doing the same ol same.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
I’m working on using my personal experience to write, but it’s tougher than you’d think. I love the way the old country songs tell a story, but I find it more difficult to do. I usually come up with a song and then make up words, but I think using life experiences adds another level,so it’s a work in progress.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I love how you hear the first few notes of a song that you and everyone know and it sets up your feelings, good, bad, sad, happy. All of these are emotions that everyone experiences, so I hope that people can use our songs to escape for a little while.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
It’s a medium that is amazing. People who don’t speak your language still can feel your music, and I find that incredible. They have no idea what you’re saying, but they can feel your emotions.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
I prefer the smaller venues, it’s more intimate than having a sea of people.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
I’d have to say Randy Rhodes, he was young when he died and I think he was just starting to come into his own style. He’s one of the best ever!
Where can our listeners follow and support your music?
We have a few songs on Spotify, but reverb nation is where you can find all of our songs, downloads are free.
Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
I thank God for the blessings he’s given me. I’ve been really lucky for my family, my band and all of our fans. I hope to be playing for crowds and help people escape the craziness that our world has become.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
That we’re no different than they are. Just average people sharing and enjoying music and life.
