Formula Indie Sessions : Interview with Veronicka Valentine

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
I’ve been in dance classes since I was about three years old so my connection to music started there. Even at such a young age, when listening to songs/music instantly it makes you want to connect through movement.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
My passion for making music began with a conversation with my father when I was 11 about how I wanted to become an artist. I wrote my first song shortly after that and continued to develop my creative writing first.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
The story behind I’m Flirting is about someone who you know that you have a crush on, but the relationship is not serious yet. Think about when you meet someone and you go to all the same events or the same parties and it’s a friend of a friend or someone who makes you laugh or you see them around and you’re just waiting for the moments that make the relationship get closer and closer.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
My sound is something that one would call latin pop with elements of electronic. When putting sounds together I always lean toward something that feels authentic to my Dominican heritage, and I like to keep it current by incorporating samples, and sounds that are from this current generation.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
One thing that I learned that completely changed the way that I make music is that there is a certain way that things feel when you are creating from a raw emotional state. Every song that I wrote came from a real moment that I had or that I experienced someone else having and because of that my music has become so much better and my writing is so much more relatable.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
For my creative projects, I create my compositions in Logic Pro and I record into Protools.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Oh goodness, I was on this platform for indie artists recently(ninaprotocol.com) and I fell in love with this sound from a band called “deer park”. Although our sounds are nothing alike, I love that gritty rockish sound that they developed. I downloaded their album right away.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
Everyone that you talk to carries a different feel/vibration. Then ones that resonate the most with my usually somehow cross over into my artistic world. Although not all of my art is based off of someone, I do love a good muse.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I want my listeners to embody what it feels like to live in the moment, play around, and not take everything so seriously.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Persistence, love for what you do, and follow through is the key to success. The love for what I do keep me persistent and following through drives growth which is the perfect combination for success.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
OMG! Um…. Coachella, Winter Music Festival, The abbey, the Triboudor, Crypto stadium, Madison square garden, anywhere I can get to a massive audience and share my soul.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Wow, that’s such a big question. There are so many people that I just love in this industry. If I am going off of the current sounds that I am releasing I have to stay true to my artistry and after some careful though I would love to work with Bad Bunny, Nicki Manaj, Cardi B, Rihanna, Arianna Grande,Jennifer Lopez and anyone else that embodies the sound of Latin Pop, Reggeton, and R&B.
