Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Adam Newling

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
The first week my older sister started school she came home with a tuba, I was in awe of this horrendous sounding metal monstrosity, I fell in love with music that day and have been in love ever since.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I was already playing the clarinet and piano at school, so i had an idea of what playing music was in the school band, when i was maybe 7 i found my mothers old acoustic guitar from her university days and started teaching myself how to finger notes, as soon as i figured out how to make a sound i started writing songs.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
It happened incidentally, i was playing session guitar for a project and always writing songs, when the friend whose project it was convinced me to show the A&R people at the label she worked with on one of my songs. A week later they had offered me a contract to sign me as a solo artist, before then Adam Newling was just something my mum called me when i was in trouble.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
It’s folk music.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Do not fear writing “bad” songs
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Red rocks
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
