Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Red Velvet Supreme

Introduction of the project (Speaking to Red Velvet from Red Velvet Supreme)
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
Not entirely sure. Being from NYC I was into more Rap and R&B having been born in 1995. Growing up was the era of 50 Cent and Jay Z at their peaks. I remember on 9/11 50 Cent and Kanye West had a competition on whose album would sell more, I thought rock and roll was whack and all like Kiss which seemed so uncool to me. Then I heard Jimi Hendrix one day and was instantly converted.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I started playing guitar around 14 or 15 years old. I’d say a few years later around 19 or 20 I figured why the hell not try to start a band, record, and do shows.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
It started off as a music outlet for me to make whatever I want. My original concept was Modern Day Blues and it still is. Overall though I like to record live, the old school way mostly, and to make the best recordings I can. It can range from blues, rock, psychedelic, funk, folk, indie, etc. At the end of the day it’s me.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Red Velvet Supreme I think encapsulates it. Haha. I guess luxurious, maximalist, free, virtuosity, twists and turns, living, exploratory, powerful, intentional, purposeful, that’s a few words.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
I generally do it in an old school method so not much. I’d say I learned more through mixing and mastering over the years. It’s all trial and error.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
All recording softwares are the same but we use Pro Tools. I’d say my Les Paul, Tele, Strat, and whatever oth guitars are needed for the song. They’re all tools at the end of the day. Marshall amp is my main sound although this Vox AC 30 has also been great.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Nobody very recent. I’d say Mac Demarco and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets but not so much their recent releases. Hopefully Bruno Mars’ new album is as good as 24k Magic or Silk Sonic.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
Blues is all about authenticity which is my musical baseline. My upcoming single Hit and Run is based on a real event I witnessed. I would say all my songs arfe truthful and relevant to life and experiences. I believe we need more of that the typical tropes and themes we hear in general. We need more people to embrace their individuality then to blend in to what is out there now. God made us all unique for a reason.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
Power, Joy, Strength, Reflection, Positivity, Thoughtfulness, Freedom, Vulnerability. My music has a purpose, each song is different.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
No clue. I would say as a musician though you can learn/interact and get to know another musician through jamming that you can never do in other aspects of life. Music is magic in that sense. When you click with someone musically, you know them on a different almost spiritual level that other people can’t ever experience or get to know. It’s almost like that level of bond/understanding you have with someone after having slept with them, you just know them on a different level now and it’s the same when you play music with other people. You’re getting to know them in a way that nobody else can ever access otherwise.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Red Rocks, Royal Albert Hall, Rome, Death Valley.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, BB King, Lightnin Hopkins, plus countless others. In terms of modern acts it would be Bruno Mars, Black Keys, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and Tame Impala. Their music says it all.
