Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Hugsmacht

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
When I was a very young boy, so around 4 years old, I got a cassette recorder from my parents with a cassette of the current hits like ABBA etc. I was totally taken with it and couldn’t stop listening to the cassette.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
That came as a teenager when I got my first instrument and then wanted to start a band.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
Me and my school friend have been making music together since school. We had different bands, and made mostly rock music and the lyrics were always in english. We released a few albums. About 8 years ago, he came up with a dialect song and after that we started this project. We recorded the first album all by ourselves, without a band. Only then was a band formed. Now our second album has been released.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Difficult to say, as it cannot be assigned to any one style or genre. It is simply dialect music with influences from rock, pop, funk and jazz.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
This has never changed completely. Through the experience and also the training as a sound engineer and composer, my approach to recording and arranging has changed.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
The musician always comes first. That’s my top priority. After that, of course, my instruments like the piano and my DAW to capture the ideas or then develop them further. But there is no particular tool for this.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I was just at a The Slow Show concert. I had mixed the band live back in 2012 when they were for the first time in Switzerland. It was nice to see the whole love and development of the band.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
How exactly is still difficult to say. Personal experiences certainly flow into my music. The mood or current situation can have a strong influence on a song. The vision is mainly driven by experience.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
Our motto is “Stories from life” in dialect. These are everyday situations that, I think, many people have already experienced in this way and can thus indenify themselves.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
That you can achieve a lot with music. It triggers emotions, awakens energy, motivates and brings people together.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
I don’t prefer a special festival or concert venue. Of course, I would like to be able to play at any major festival. Whether that would be in Switzerland, elsewhere in Europe or in America.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Also a difficult question…… hm.., Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, actually a lot of musicans come to mind. Why? I think, first of all, it would be a lot of fun to make music with them secondly, probably I could learn a lot.from them.
