Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with DO’VE

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

I remember that when I was very young, I used to listen to my sister singing into a microphone she’d won in a competition, and as soon as she left the house, I snuck into her bedroom to sing along to the hits she listened to on over and over again.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

It was around the same time. As I was feeling a bit bored, I started by creating a unique language of my own. And as I kept repeating certain phrases, I ended up singing them. I enjoyed it so much that I took existing songs and rewrote the lyrics – and sometimes even the melodies. I then realised that music is a means of communication that I would use for the rest of my life.

What’s the story behind your current music project?

I’d say it’s time for me to reveal myself, to stop hiding behind excuses out of fear of judgement. I want to rediscover that joy that brought me this far, and which I lost as I met people who made me doubt myself. And today I use those doubts and moments of weakness as a source of strength, so it’s even better than before! I had to discover a whole range of emotions to be able to channel them into my music.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

There are many influences, though they lean towards soul. I’ve long admired American divas such as Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, all of whom have roots in gospel music. It was through their songs that I began to develop my voice. However, my music isn’t meant to be romantic, but rather introspective.

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

My message is at the heart of my music-making. Before, I used to take samples and try to fit lyrics over them, like a bit of a DIY job. It might have sounded good at times, but the track didn’t feel like a genuine whole. Nowadays, the lyrics inspire my melodies, and the way I feel about the track determines its overall atmosphere.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

My voice, my keyboard and a recorder.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

India Arie is an artist I particularly admire. She has written some wonderful songs, including ‘I Am Light’, which is a relatively recent track.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

My life hasn’t been plain sailing, and I know that many people feel the same way about their own lives. That’s why I want my music to be imbued with depth and resilience, but also with joy. I want to bring a smile to the faces of those who listen to me, to inspire them to get moving and to hold on to or rediscover hope.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

Life is beautiful and our time is precious.

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

It is so important to connect with yourself in order to connect with others. Our own stories tell us a great deal about the state of the world today, and it is essential that we connect more deeply with one another and with our own nature (and therefore with nature itself).

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

All the venues or festivals that welcome me with open arms

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

There are so many I admire, it’s a difficult choice. But I still think Aretha Franklin is one of those truly legendary figures who, through their life experiences, lived and breathed music and knew how to touch listeners deep in their souls.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?

I’m currently working on the next tracks for the album I’m creating so that I can go on tour. I’m putting my entire heart and soul into it. I can’t wait to meet my audience and offer them my music.

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

That we’re not so different, that I could be a friend – or even a sister – to them. My music is their music; my struggle is their struggle.
