Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with St.Arnaud

St Arnaud 2025 Press Photos — 6 (1)

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

Bargaining with my parents to let me take guitar lessons. If I took piano for two years, I could learn guitar. I did it, and then hated learning guitar haha.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

With friends in high school, learning how to stack harmonies in folk songs.

What’s the story behind your current music project?

In 2017, a close friend and former bandmate passed away in an accident; I created this project from the ashes of that project, and haven’t really stopped since.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

Light and clever indie rock or pop music.

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

Don’t force it. Sometimes ideas just need a little time to come together.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

An acoustic guitar, a notepad, and a small keyboard. Maybe some Ableton or Garageband, but neither consistently.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

Spookey Ruben – a Canadian artist active from the 1990s until today.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

I think a lot of my musical and artistic vision is ‘noticing things and shrugging them off’. I try not to get too bogged down in the details in life, and instead try to keep track of the bigger picture.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

A little smirk and a head bob

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

Just keep showing up, at your own pace is fine, but don’t stop showing up.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

Massey Hall in Toronto, or Troubadour in LA

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

Paul Simon – I heard him talk about his ~6-month process of songwriting, and I felt a lot of kinship with that. He has such a wide variety of musical style out there too.

Where can our listeners follow and support your music? (Website,Spotify, IG, links)

Instagram, YouTube, and Spotify are where I am most active!

@starnaudband

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?

I’d love to tour more easily – doing this as an indie artist is very difficult and complicated. I would love to play through Europe more often, and to venture down the West and East Coasts of the US.

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

This is an odd question for me; I guess I hope the songs resonate with them, and they feel a human connection being shared.
