Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with India Arkin

Artist Promo Pic - India Arkin

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

My dad was always super into music for as long as I can remember – so as a kid we had this radio CD player and there was always always music blaring out of that while we got that days mission done. I feel as though I’ve always been immersed in it

How did your passion for creating music begin?

Honestly, completely by accident –

I was always a through and through creative, and had gone to Newcastle to go to art school and just before I left had started dating a musician. I had always tinkered with writing music in a very unserious way, but I had never been around musicians really before that and so through him I was immersed by all these amazingly talented and musical people and honestly felt inspired. So following that I took the leap and joined a band and everything kind of spiralled from there really – it was like i unlocked a love and life i didnt know i was meant to have, but its everything to me now.

What’s the story behind your current music project?

India Arkin is my solo project, to be frank, its an overpour of who i authentically am and how i feel about life, the world and relationships. An incredibly intimate project.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

Soft soaring vocals, jazzy guitar, intimate lyrics – a perfect marriage of order and catharsis.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

Just me and a guitar is all I need!

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

Oh my goodness – I mean im continually obsessed with Phoebe Alice Lou, Billie Martin and at the minute I’m also enjoying an artist called Jas Ratchford.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

I moved A LOT as a kid, I’m only 25 and I’ve moved over 30 times in my life – so I find that home is a massive topic that I seem to end up visiting over and over again in all of my songs, and the restlessness I find around that topic.

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

That true vulnerability always connects.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

Glastonbury always! But I’ve recently relocated to Bristol so I’m hoping that brings me a little closer to making that happen aha.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

Ooooooh!! Probably Matilda Mann, I’ve been following her since 2019 and I just think shes incredible and she also just seems like a wonderful human. If not her then maybe Phoebe Alice Lou or Men I Trust.
