Formula Indie Sessions : Interview with Alex Memu

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

I remember the time I was a 12 years old I used to listen to the radio and wait for my favorite song to come up so I can record my own tape to enjoy on my first Walkman, but then, an even stronger feeling comes to mind and is that of when I got my First Apple, iPod 3G 30GB of storage, I had ears for no one always with my headphones on, I had basically, I had an entire discography for each of my favorite artists, and it was right at my fingertips, and I had just started to learn skateboarding, making new friends so I was listening to music most of the time.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

The first time I picked up a guitar was in the UK at the age of 18, and fell in love with the sound as it was the sound of most of my favorite solo artists and bands back then, that’s when I knew I wanted to learn to play and create my own music, but it wasn’t till later when I got back to living in Spain, meeting so many new friends with different tastes in music, we always had a guitar at hand in almost every day adventure, so many new emerging artists favorites of the moment and with a constant learning on writing and composing songs, soon left no borders for creativity.

Whats the story behind your current music project?

I am super MEGA excited to be working on an EP that focuses on Human emotion, with the knowledge and inspiration gathered while growing as a human being and as a musician. It’s a feeling that cannot be described if you haven’t really lived it, through the good and the bad, family, friends, relationships everything.. of course all this links to my past and present so i’m hopeful it will resonate with many a soul out there, who have probably been through quite a lot or probably still are!

So this EP is a work in progress, but I am doing something that not many artists tend to do which is releasing the main song of the album first, it will be released on 30 January 2026, and the way I will be releasing the music of this album will be in separate singles for the first four songs, then the rest will follow in a full pack completing the album.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

I tend to create my music through Raw Emotion, and it always depends on how I feel at the time I start to write and compose, in fact, most times I start creating because of a feeling.

So to explain this in an easyer ways to understand, whether you’re happy or sad you will definitely find a song of mine that could match the feeling that you’re experiencing.

Say, for example, Island Life, written in a happy summer moment on the beach inspired on the atmosphere that two of my sooo many favorite artists create like Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz..

it’s supposed to enlighten the mood of anyone that enjoy their hard earned free time, no matter where they are be it their favorite Beach, or vacation on one of many sun bathed islands of the world.

What is one thing youve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

This is a hard one, making music could be super easy, or really difficult and many a times frustrating, but the one thing I learned throughout the years, which is one thing that many other musicians can relate to is to finish that one idea you have that you think it’s great before moving to the next one, that way, the energy of that first idea you where developing will stay constant, and completing that task will leave you more eager to make the next one…or the 10 or more next ideas you may have!

That’s the one thing that I learned and I believe is key to learning and keep growing while composing new music.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

Most of my ideas are mainly developed with my Acoustic guitar, then when I have a clear idea of what I want to do I open logic and I start recording.

TBH, my most essential instrument is my Acoustic Guitar.. Yet! there comes the time that I could be using anything at my disposal to record and sample in the project, anything that I feel like it should be part of the project.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

This is so difficult… I am into soo many artists right now! 🥹…

But I will name 2 at least sorry 🤷🏽‍♂️

Firstly I am blown away by the Powerful and Raw sound of Extraordinary MARO and the same goes for the 2 lovely brothers from Amistat.

Right now, listening to their music, makes me want to pick up the guitar and create.

I absolutely love music, and it’s very difficult for me to choose a favorite.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

I personally think that life experiences are everything and whether we like it or not they play a big role in our creative process.

From a cultural POV I moved around a lot while grown up, like I lived part of my life in Romania and when I left, I also left that type of musical culture behind, I know some people may say that you shouldn’t lose the roots, but my life in Romania wasn’t really the best and I struggled through a lot of things over there and forgetting and moving on felt like the right thing to do.

So when I moved out to the UK and Spain, I had to adapt to new cultures, new environments, new friends with different tastes, every time I moved, and I suppose the most concrete answer I can give you to this question is that the most influential thing I learned Is ¨Adaptation¨, and that works in many fronts for me personally.

Example: I use this tool in creating a different sound and vibe in music inspired by the best new music out there wich is changing and growing every year, so I never stay behind.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

I always create my music based on moments in my life, be it a difficult time or a really chill or happy moment, so I’m not sure…

It all depends on the listener, my only hope is that my music resonates with the person that is listening, and if the listener feels good and enjoys my creation leaving them wanting more than that’s great for me is the most important thing.

All I want to say to my present fans and the new-comers is to keep in mind that we, the artists are doing this for you, so you are very important to us, for without you our art would be in vain.

Whats the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

I learned this the hard way, and probably many other musicians have two, don’t take music for granted, especially if you’re really good at what you’re doing, and if you are really good, never under the value yourself if it’s possible, we can grind, but we have one goal and that is to grow and become better, and lastly and most importantly, don’t forget to live!

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

There are a few on my list BUT Royal Albert Hall would be a nerve-rackingly amazing experience!

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

Oh God, in the past, and in the future, if it would ever be possible, that’ll be Coldplay, another one of my most favorite bands that stuck with me, since the UK, and a more present and new artist I would absolutely love to collab with Amistat

Looking toward the future, whats your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?

My dream so far has been getting better at creating music, and keep growing as an artist with a loyal fan base, and I think it will still be the same for the future but also to really get to inspire somebody out there with my music and help them out through hard times.

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

That, behind the artistry there’s a very normal every day person who would absolutely love to meet and make new friends and collaborations.
