Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Deleqúa

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
My earliest memory of music is church. Growing up in the Black church, the sound of voices filling the room captivated me before I fully understood what music was. There was power, emotion, and release in those moments. Music felt like safety, expression, and escape all at once — and that feeling has stayed with me ever since.
⸻
How did your passion for creating music begin?
It began as survival and curiosity. I started creating music as a way to process what I couldn’t yet explain out loud. Over time, that need turned into passion, and passion turned into purpose.
⸻
What’s the story behind your current music project?
My current project reflects a rebirth. It’s about reclaiming softness, confidence, and truth after periods of struggle. The music represents choosing authenticity over fear and allowing myself to be fully seen.
⸻
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
I’d describe my sound as soulful, emotional, and cinematic — rooted in R&B and pop but driven by feeling rather than trends. It’s music meant to be felt as much as heard.
⸻
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
I learned that vulnerability is power. Once I stopped trying to impress and started telling the truth, my music became more impactful and more freeing.
⸻
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
My voice is my primary instrument, but collaboration is essential to my process. I create best when I’m working with people I genuinely connect with — collaborators who understand emotion, storytelling, and vision. Together, we blend personal experiences, shared ideas, and reflections of the world we’re living in to create something honest and expressive.
⸻
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I have love for all of my fellow independent artists, but right now I’m especially feeling Angel Maxine. She leads with authenticity and fearlessness, and her work carries real emotion and intention. It’s inspiring to see her continue to create and take up space unapologetically. She’s awesome!
⸻
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
My experiences shape everything I create. My music is a reflection of resilience, identity, and self-discovery. Each song carries pieces of my journey and growth. I will always try to stay true to artistry that I feels right.
⸻
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I hope listeners feel seen, affirmed, and empowered — especially in their softness. I want my music to remind people that vulnerability is not weakness and that no matter who you
are, you can absolutely be whoever you truly know YOU to be.
⸻
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Music has taught me patience and trust. It reminds me that timing matters, growth isn’t linear, and authenticity always resonates in the end. Allowing to be your solitude.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Music has taught me to trust timing. Everything unfolds when it’s meant to, and the work always finds its audience when it’s honest.
⸻
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
By far, I have both a dream venue and a dream festival. My dream venue is Wembley Stadium. I’ve never been, but it’s a place I’m deeply inspired to reach one day. My dream festival is Glastonbury Festival. Performing there would truly be one for the books — spaces like those represent artistry, history, and unforgettable storytelling.
⸻
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
That’s a hard question because there isn’t just one. I’m inspired by artists who lead with intention, evolution, and emotional honesty. Collaborating with anyone who values growth, reinvention, and storytelling would feel natural and meaningful to me. Those are the kinds of creative connections that truly excite me.
⸻
Where can our listeners follow and support your music?
Listeners can find my music on all major streaming platforms and follow my journey on social media. Everything is centralized at www.delequa.com.
⸻
Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
My dream is expansion — reaching wider audiences while staying deeply connected to the truth of my art. I want the next chapter to feel fearless, global, and grounded.
⸻
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
I hope listeners discover my humanity. Beyond the music, I want them to see resilience, softness, and the freedom that comes from fully embracing who you are. Above all that giving up is NEVER an option.
