Formula Indie Sessions : Interview with Chris Dodson

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
I was fascinated by the music I heard on the radio when I was about five years old.

How did your passion for creating music begin?
I started working at a record label when I was fourteen. Being around many songwriters inspired me to begin writing songs myself.

What’s the story behind your current music project?
Throughout my career as a music publisher, record producer, and music executive, I have been involved with many major hit records and major worldwide stars. I regularly write, record, and release new songs.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
My sound is basically Country, Country Rock, Rock, Pop, Blues, and Folk.

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Working for the top producers in the industry taught me a tremendous amount.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
I primarily write on guitar and use a computer to structure the lyric sheet. I will usually rewrite a song about three hundred times before I finish it.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I am a major fan of popular music in all its forms.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
I have been working in the national music business for 60 years, and I am tremendously influenced every day by the people around me.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I simply want to entertain and inspire music fans.

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Always strive for creative excellence and stay true to your creative self.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
I love all venues, festivals, and opportunities to entertain audiences. I have been very blessed to perform on some great shows all over the Southeast and Southwest.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
It would be a total blast to get to write some songs with The Beatles.
